Actel 0245 Messiah 2 Euro and premature death of a v7 PAL machine - connected?
Actel 0245 Messiah 2 Euro and premature death of a v7 PAL machine - connected? –
Anyone help with this one?
I chipped a brand new, box-fresh v7 PAL PS2, SCPH39003, bought in the UK, with a Messiah 2 Euro, firmware 1.07. It was, even if I say so myself, a beautiful install - and it worked trouble free for exactly 3 days, playing everything - originals, imports, cd-r, dvd-r, Hong Kong silvers, all without a hitch.
Then. in the middle of playing a game, it just crashed, disc read error, and every time you rebooted it, the disc spins in five little jerks, accompanied by soft clicking noises, and then it just goes to the browser.
I took the whole laser unit and put it in another new, unchipped PAL v7 - but got same results, wouldn't boot anything, same 5 jerks and clicking from the CD/DVD mechanism. So I concluded from this that the laser was just dead, seeing as it now behaved the same way in a virgin, unchipped new machine playing originals. What I'm wondering is if there could be any connection with the sketchy 0245 batch of Messiahs and the laser dying so suddenly. It was my last 0245 batch Euro chip, and have since done several Pro 0241 installs without a hitch.
Now, was it just my bad luck that I got a crappy laser in that V7 that just died? It's just that I want to re-use the Euro 0245 chip but am wary of it killing another new PS2. Having been modding machines for years, I'm not convinced that the general build quality of the PS2 is up to much anyway, these days. It seems like the new v7s are plasticky, rattley and generally a lot cheaper quality, but maybe I'm just imagining it...
Anyway, any constructive input would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Hmm I had the above happen 3 times on v7 (39003) pal. These were 1.07 245 euro M2s. This was from three pulled from a batch of 20, which I got prior to PCB fix being released. HOWEVER, after PCB fix was done on the remaining 17 I have had NO problems with them whatsoever. But yes I got the same read-error on the first 3 almost immediately after installing them, and like you, backing out of install made no difference..
The 0245 EURO were not from the same Actel 'wafer' as the defective Pros and so they are deemed not to have the problem.
In any case the DVD-R with the bad wafer problem is only a symptom of the Actel chip not initialising correctly when booting DVD-R. So this has no bearing on the laser issue.
The laser problem you have is likely due to either:
1 A crap laser that gave out
2 Some cable issue on re-install
But to keep my mind at rest...I guess its ok to carry on doing track-cut on 245s?
