There are som many modchips in varying price brackets. Some are "genuine" and some are clones.
Magic 3.1 clones are the best value for money in my opinion. They boot most games (that is a few DVD rips excepted) and can be as cheap as $20 retail. The Genuine Magic 3.1 is the same price as Messiah 2, generally and so does not represent good value for money. Magic 3 is not v8 compatible at this time. www.china-magic.com
Messiah 2 boots everything (which you might not need - like DVD rips) and costs between $35 and $50. Messiah 2 is v8 compatible. (www.messiah2.com)
DMS3 boots much like Magic 3.1; the new version 2.0 might boot more and is v8 compatible. DMS3 has additional features (www.dms3.com) that might appeal to you. I won't list them but they are potentially added value.
As to whether or not they damage the PS2? The ones I have listed do bot damage the PS2. There is debate about this subject, but people in the know know why or why not this would be the case. The laser is always on when a game is loaded like a light bulb in the room. Whether or not you are reading the book, the light is on. So even the fact that you might be trying to read inferior media doesn't really have a measurable effect on the lase.
Agreed Charlie about the damage issue. The "Damage" is usually attributed to sub-par quality media and/or improper burning. Regardless of the chip--make sure you have a stable burning process (RMN/Primo or Alcohol 120 seem to be the ones of choice for DVD. CloneCD is GREAT for CD's) and QUALITY media. When it comes to media, you generally get what you pay for--every now and then we get lucky and find a source with an unbelievable deal and will post it here. Expect to pay around $1.00 to $1.40/disc in 25pc cakes for solid 2X performers. 1X discs will work fine and are considerably cheaper, but there are a lot of crappy 1X discs out there. Oh, did I mention it is best to have a burner capable of -R burning? +R discs work in some boxes, but -R is the most consistent performer.
Good Luck!
