I will agree with you and many other OLD SCHOOL-ERS will as well, to play your PS1 backups, a chip is the best way to go right now.
But there are many other reasons to use a chip, everyone seems to have their favorite ways.
Either chip will do...

Either chip will work great in either system you mentioned. if you were to say you had a slim and a fat ps2, I'd say the Crystal chip in the slim and the DMS4 in the fat, but with both fat ps2's, just go at it dude.

the crystal chip will work flawless on the v3....as you already have the Mars Pro installed in the version 9....it will be recommended not to change the chip cause you will not want to trouble something that is working beautifully.

and the Mars chip doesn't have ToxicOS. maybe the user wants a more compatible version of hdl on his system using that.

the older mars don't have it but the newer one do (806hd and 816hd)
but it is not that.....my point is....to interfere with something that is working so good to install something else that might give the console some minor or major problems.....that is something to look at first before doing.

What? only DMS4 Pro (regular, and SE, regular EZI and SE EZI) chips can run toxicOS. And there's only one modbo chip that can run Toxic BIOS, but can't save any configurations.

So what Dark Mod is really saying here is that the newer Mars chips are in fact clones of the DMS4pro, since they have to be so in order to run ToxicOS.
That is, unless someone has managed to extract the fundamental parts of ToxicOS for use in a brand new firmware, which I doubt very much. A straight DMS4pro clone is far more likely.
And if that is the case then one can't really speak of the Mars chips as one specific modchip type, if different versions of it are really cloning different original designs.

Bingo!!!!!.....you are absolutely right dlanor.....the mars IS a clone of the DMS4 pro.....it contains all the necessary toxic software in the spi for it to run hdloaders and stablise the harddrives in the ps2
