  1. #1 v9 NTSC PS2, brand new CC 2.0, black screen after firmware update
    rakeesh Guest
I *just* installed the newly-arrived Crystal Chip 2.0 into my PS2, which is a v9. At first power-on, it booted into the Sony splash screen. Wouldn't launch Xenogears 2, of course, which had been left in the drive. I booted the v29 flash disc, and the menu came up fine.

Chose "Update Firmware", and it had no complaints. Then I restarted the system, and from that point on, I get nothing... just a black screen. The LED on the chip turns green for just a quarter second, then goes off. The disc spins, but there's no sign of life.

What have I done wrong, and can I recover from it?

You have to install the BootManager too. CC2.0 won't work without it.
Use the Recovery Mode to boot the Firmware CD. Turn on your PS2 and press reset 3 times, then it will boot again.

You must also install BootManager to the flash. Since you didn't do it when you upgraded the firmware, you will need to use "Recovery Mode" to boot your upgrade disc and install BM. Recovery Mode is accessed by pressing the reset button 3 times.

Awesome. I knew I'd done something stupid, but wasn't sure how to access recovery mode. Thanks for the swift reply, the console is back up and running properly now.

Ok, so let me get this right - I'm about to install a CC 2.0 chip - and when I do so, I have to use the boot manager? Will there ever be an option to not use the boot manager, and stick with the Sony one? I'm just curious...

Yes, there probably will be that possibillity.
But why the heck do want to use that shitty $ony thing? Because of the fancy items? You can start that browser from BM anyway, so you can still use it even when using BM.
But without BM you will not be able to use any of the features, like screen fixes and such. You can't run apps from MC, USB, HDD and you don't have network support, unless you use uLE.

    best regards Jones23

I was just thinking it would be less confusing for some clients I've installed chips in, and will probably upgrade to the CC chips later on. There are a lot of people out there who fear change

Okay I have the hacked firmware (R29) and the Mega Pack 2 from Wiki.

Is boot manager already included in the hacked firmware bin file or is it in the Mega Pack 2?

If not, do I combine the two togther and burn to CD? or do I burn and install them separately? i.e.
    1. Firmware cd in
    2. Install
    3. firmware cd out
    4. Mega Pack CD in
    5. Install Boot Manager
    6. Mega Pack CD out

Could anyone who has done the flashing please help?

    Cheers,
    Ken
