Very strange really - I've had problems where games (originals and backups) just freeze..5mins into a game or one hour into it so gave up on the PS2. I've started using it again and thought I would turn the CC off (v1.2?) so installed BootManager so I can play my retails (in case the chip is the problem).

I installed BM to memory card, but now the PS2 is dead. I get no picture on the screen, and have tried two different monitors. There is also no sound. I can't even get the Sony start up screen!

Anyone have a fix, or should I sell for parts?

Edit: I can't even get recovery mode to work.

    ------------------------------------------------------

Ok looking at the install diagram : http://www.crystal-chips.com/documen.../cc11_v14a.jpg

I don't have a wire on T0, and don't know what HA is. I have had this installed for me but the chip was working ok. What are these points, and what needs doing to them - if anything?

    ------------------------------------------------------

Ok, it looks like I do not need the T0 point.

    ------------------------------------------------------

Runs fine if I remove the power to the chip (3v3), but black screen when it is powered on. I don't believe it's the wiring as this only happened when i tried to install boot manager. What's the next step - have I fried the chip?

    ------------------------------------------------------

Perhaps I have found my own answer - I will try to flash the chip direct via the network

Try booting without the MC inserted, in case the bootmanager install went wrong...

Have done mate, I've somehow corrupted the chip. I'm trying to get my head around connecting my PC and PS2 via the network - I don't think I need to access the bootmanager or anything?

Edit: Doesn't boot games if the chip is disconnected via v3v wire, kicks up errors such as 'no data' (no memory card inserted), or the red screen with 'please insert playstation game'

If you can't enter recovery mode, then I'm pretty sure that something is wrong with the installation. Or you simply made a mistake when trying to enter recovery mode.
Most people think that something magical will happen when in recovery mode, but the PS2 will only start up normally like any unmodded PS2 does and you can start the upgrade disc.
Here's what you have to do to enter recovery mode:
    - turn off PS2
    - press reset once to turn on PS2
    - wait approx. 1 sec then press reset again
    - wait 0.5 sec and press reset for the third time (and maybe a fourth time after another 0.5 sec, just to be sure)
Now the PS2 should start up normally and you can insert and boot the upgrade disc. Install FW first and then BM.

To do the installation via network you have to start PS2Link on your PS2 either from CD or from MC with BM, so it's not an option in your current situation. (unless you can get recovery mode to work)

If nothing ot the above seems to help, I'd recommend to completely remove the chip to see if the PS2 still works fine and if it does reinstall the chip nice and clean with much patience and care.

Jones23, thanks for the heads up, I wasn't sure if the PS2 needed anything installed on it. When I try to get it into recovery mode, the tv screen flickers - it's like there is some sort of signal but the frequency isn't supported by my TV.

As for the 'bad installation' - I don't understand *how* it could have just happened, it's been working ok for over a year and a half (apart from crashing lol) then suddenly I update the FW and install BM and it goes up the creek?

That's a strange behaviour indeed. Sounds like there's something wrong with the hardware.
What happens when you disable the chip (6 times reset)? And did you try to start the upgrade disc when in recovery mode? It should detect the region of your PS2 and send the correct video signal.

You wrote that the PS2 worked for some time and then froze when playing games. That sounds like a heat problem. Maybe the fan wasn't running and the PS2 shut down due to overheat. That also may have fried some other parts of the PS2. I'm only guessing though cause I'm no hardware pro.
I'd completely remove the chip, clean the board and check if the PS2 is working correctly and if it does reinstall the chip.

Just to update everyone, pushing reset six times did nothing. I unhooked the chip and completely removed it - still nothing. Swapped lasers with an older one and still nothing.

In the end I made a boob when resoldering and got some flux where flux should not be and couldn't get it out again so gave up. Got a second hand slim PS2 suited and booted and a fan off eBay to go in the USB port. So far no problems, but it's been picky reading media and some NTSC games have booted in black and white..so a quick firmware upgrade me thinks.
