My Playstation 2 couldn't cope with games anymore (I think the laser died) so I splashed out on a "special" slimline (SCPH-75003) late last year. It has never been right and I've tried some of the things here (the guy I got it from has been no use). I used to think it was problems reading the media, or when using a cheat device. Now I am convinced it isn't.
The crashes/freezing is completely random as far as I know - the biggest culprit was Need For Speed: Most Wanted it seemed to die as soon as there was too much going on in the game i.e. crashing into loads of cars, spinning out of control and into a gate or something; however the original played a fair bit better it still crashed.
Maybe the laser is just naff, however I was assured by the guy the CC doesn't affect the laser like the earlier slimline problems.
Tonight I have two examples. One game froze at a "checkpoint" and I restarted but progressed farther, it later crashed and I had that really annoying "buzz" drone! another game crashed in an FMV, or when loading/checking memory card.
The memory card which I use BM with is one of those massive ones from Datel so not the standard 8MB. Could this be the problem? Even though I have this option in Boot Manager (1.7) on. The firmware also seems to be up to date on the chip.
I have tried the PS2 vertically and horizontally and this still happens. Would you think it could be the memory card? Even though this occurance is random and happens with or without the bootmanager memory card in slot one?
I got a 'special' PS2 because of the hassle having to do the work myself. Should I open her up and check all the connections? I have read that overheating may occur due to dry connections - could this be one of the problems?
Does anyone have the right diagramme so I can check everything? Again, the guy I got it from didn't have anything and wasn't much help.
Thanks in advance.
