LA chip mod
I have just ordered a 2.0 Crystal chip for my v9 PS2. I want to know everyones opinion on whether I should mod the LA chip or not. If this mod is mainly for reduction of voltage going to laser as a result of scratched disk I dis-agree. Me and my son play some disk that are really scratched up, but they are the original disk. I just can't see the diff between scratched original or back ups.

The Romeo mod that is lowering the 12V to 5 volt is a very good fix to protect the coils. But even with this fix when playing on bad disk's for hours the coils and the LA chip can fry.But I replace many fried coils and LA/BA chips from ps2's without this fix (most of them V9/V10) and sofar only had to repair one ps2 with fried coils with the romeo mod.
So in my humble opinion you should do this fix.

I agree, and I also think that you should not use scratched discs. That's the great thing about modchips - you can make new copies of your games and play the unscratched discs, which will save your PS2. I have a friend who is very destructive with games, and his PS2 works like crap. I keep telling him he needs a new laser, but he keeps ignoring me and playing his scratched up games. Very soon he won't be able to do anything with his PS2 as a result. Scratched media are bad for anything - CD players, DVD players, and especially video game consoles.
