The final saga...

OK.. got my PS2 working again with CC 1.0 and FW19...

The only issue now is starting games...

With official originals everything works first time...

With back-ups the PS2 is slightly more fussy... it does not immediately recognise the discs... just spins a few times and then stops... then retries...

I have worked out that with a squeeze to the center of the case it then seems to recognise the disc and after that all is fine...

I guess this could be a symptom of having taken the PS2 apart so many times...

Is there a trick to avoid the squeeze?

It sounds more like a laser issue then anything else.

Perhaps you could try to adjust the height of the lens, or try a good cleaning...

So unlikely to be how I have screwed it all together?

How much tension should go into the screws that hold the laser down? i.e. the rubber ones grommet ones?

As for alignment... I know in the old PS2s there was a white wheel you could turn to move the head up and down... is there a similar adjustment in a v14?

Hard to say, its strange that this is happening with a new V14. It might be that the case is getting bound up, or the motherboard, on something and messing up the alignment. The case screws (as well as the rest) don't need to be overly tight, just snug like anything else. The really isn't any adjustment for the lasers hight with the slim consoles as its not needed now with the flip top design the laser stays in position.

I swapped out the LASER today and get the same behaviour.

One thing I did notice this evening is that the PS2 will not read my Original DVD of Disney's Cars. It completely fails to recognise the disc as readable...

... but if I remove the memory card with BM 1.8 from the slot...

... the PS2 starts, reads the DVD and starts to play the movie.

Very odd.

Have you tried to upgrade to the most resent FW/BM? Have you tried booting in minimal mode?

FW34 doesn't work for me on this combination. FW19 used to before I tried the upgrade but is now erratic. Perhaps it's a hardware issue with my CC 1.0 following the abuse of it's SI line.

As for minimal mode... it doesn't get that far... it is the disc recognition part that is failing... or more precisely... often failing.

When I have time I'll have to swap the modchip out but it's annoying because the PS2 is actually useable... just wait or squeeze to get a backup recognised; take the memory card to get a DVD working and originals work just fine.

The saga continues....

Reflashed back to FW19 and everything back to before...

Originals work 100%

Backups don't boot initially... disc spins a bit, head moves a bit but doesn't recognise disc...

But after a bit of compression/twisting of the case... nothing specific it recognises the disc and everything is fine subsequently...

My latest theory is that the compression/twisting actually twists the internal contents of the PS2 and hence might slightly move a dodgy connection...

I'm in a real quandry now... since I can get the device to work as long as I'm prepared to twist it/jiggle it... I could swap my CC 1.0 for something else but its a shame since it almost works.

Given that the PS2 boots 100% into Boot Manager can I eliminate a certain number of wires?

Which wires are relevant to just the disc recognition phase?

A,B, G,H,I ?

I would recheck all your wires in this case and do NOT twist the console any more! :) You only increase any damage or cause new damages. I would suspect that one of the vias for the wires you mentioned(A-I) are responsible.

I hope you're able to switch to SLE soon so you are no longer tortured by this combination. ;)
