My friend has a NTSC v7 ps2 and wants to play the PAL game cricket, i tried playing on my ps2 with duo3 gold and it was black and white, will this crystal chip play it or maybe the matrix?

Of course it does, AFAIK all chips can play import games. The black&white image is just a matter of the TV set. Your TV can't display PAL colors, that's why the screen is b&w. Turning on the screen fixes or video fixes (i.e. converting PAL to NTSC) of your chip should solve that issue.
For the CC you'd have to use software release R29 (hacked of course, the original software doesn't allow booting backups or imports), cause the PAL video fixes in R34 are not working correctly with all games.

So if i install the 1.2 lite on his ps2 and then flash it to the hacked bios how do i get to the settings menu to turn on the video fix? i think with the matric you hold triangle and square to get to the settings menu but not sure about the 1.2 crystal lite

All you have to do is install BootManager on the MemCard, video fixes are turned on by default.

Yes, that's exactly what spedmetal told you. Get a CC2.0 instead of a CC1.2, then you can install BM on the chip. And he's absolutely right with his second statement, a PS2 without MemCard is pretty annoying. If your friend doesn't have one yet, he should get one ASAP.

cc 2.0 are $15 more expnsive thats why he wanted the 1.2...the matrix is cheaper also then 2.0...ill just get him the 1.2 and do the memory card thing..its not that he doesn't have a memory but he is only 12 years old and would much rather have the ps2 just play the games buy putting inside instead of having to boot to the memory card first and then run something from the memory card to play the PAL game

It's not much difference with BM, you only have a different bootup screen. You can still put in the game and turn on the PS2, just like you did before. BM will boot everything automatically and even faster than an unmodded PS2 does.
