i broke out my ps2 to hook up to my new projector, hooked up component cables and booted to the ps2 config menu. Then made sure component cables were selected and screen size was 16:9. When I boot up my projector automatically detects a 480i source, but when I boot with the memcard with the cc software, it simply hangs on the CC logo.
I go to their site only to find that they are dead. great, lol.
any idea what could cause this hang?

Can you please give more details about your setup? Like...
1) What type of Crystal Chip do you have (CC v1.0, CC v1.1 Lite, CC v1.2 Lite, CC v2.0 Pro, CC v2.0 Pro SLE)?
2) What version of the firmware is installed on the chip, is it the default firmware, or did you try to upgrade it yourself?
Yea the Crystal Chip team are no more. If there was any information you wanted from their site, you can get a copy of the entire site here.

it's a crystal chip 1.2 bought from gamecubesux here on the forum. I believe the firmware is 2.1.6 or something and I can't remember if it's official or hacked.
I noticed when I switch the ps2 back to 4:3 and reboot it loads into the cc bm just fine. But i'd rather have the ps2 set to native 16:9 so the games don't look stretched.

Have you tried going through the Configuraion > Video Wizard (in BootManager), while the PS2 is set to 16:9?
Maybe this has something to do with the theme you currently have loaded, so maybe if you selected a different theme (Configuration > Theme Manager), it might work? All I know is each BootManager theme will have it's own configuration file, which contains the screen settings and setup for each resolution type (ex: NTSC, PAL, VGA, 480P, etc). I'm only guessing here, but maybe the currently selected theme doesn't have the proper settings to work in 16:9? You can change these values by going into Configuration > Theme Manager > Configuration.

I haven't tried the theme configuration yet, but I have done the video wizard in 4:3. There are no settings other than pal, ntsc, and vga.
I can't run the wizard while the ps2 is in 16:9 b'c bootmanager freezes at the crystal-chips logo.
Is there supposed to be an option in the normal ps2 menu to choose progressive instead of interlaced?

Perhaps this is due to the old BootManager theme only having these modes (NTSC/PAL/VGA). These settings are stored in the BootManager Theme configuration file (THMINFO.PBT), which you can also see in BootManager (Configuration > Interface Configuration > BM Video Mode) for the currently active theme. If you unzip the BootManager firmware file (ex: cc_software_29.zip) and extract the cc-upgrade.bin/.cue files on your hard drive, you will see this configuration file located in "BM\THMS\<selected theme>\THMINFO.PBT". You can create your own theme, edit the THMINFO.PBT file to have more resolution modes (ex: 480p) and install from a usb device. Here's the Crystal Chips wiki theme tutorial, although it might not make much sense, but we can help you if choose to make your own theme. Personally, I just took an already created THMINFO.PBT file and edited it to what I wanted. I'm not sure if that will work, but that's my only train of thought right now as to a possible solution. Although, I have no idea what the display limitations of the PS2 or the Crystal Chips are. If Jones23 is still around, I'm sure he would know more about that.

Yes sorry, I forgot about the obvious problem...

Honestly I have no idea, I've never had any way to test my PS2 on a progressive display.
