The BM is installed on the MC, or if you have a CC2.0, it's installed in the CC's flash memory(CFlash). BM's size is about 700KB, and will never be more than 1MB, cause the CFlash is 1MB.
You need it to start apps from MC, USB, or HDD, and to configure your chip.
You can watch Xvid movies with SMS, not with BM.
Of course the CC boots everything by default, but without BM you can't use most features, such as video fixes.
The MegaPack contains most homebrew apps, but you prolly won't need all of them.
A standart 8MB MC is sufficient, I only use the originals, cause most others are crap.
BM should work fine with every brand MC.

I guess you fear to run out of space, but that won't happen, cause you can use LaunchELF(uLE) to backup all your saves to USB, HDD or to PC via network. uLE is the best save-backup-solution available, even better than the original $ony Browser.

I've just finished a new page on the Wiki, containing detailed infos about the most important terms and abbreviations. Take a look: http://ccwiki.psx-scene.com/index.php/Glossary

If it's installed correctely on MC in slot 1(mc0 then it autostarts, there's no other choice. If it doesn't, you must have made a mistake. You have to install the FW too of course.

Descriptions about homebrew apps can be found in the Homebrew forum here on PS2-Scene.

now this is definitely NOT good. i burned som cd's and dvd's to play in my ps2. sometimes they boot fine and sometimes they dont, sometimes the drive rotates to a level of unbearable noise without booting. now even my retail ps2 games wont boot and play. i managed to listen to a retail music cd, and the sound was all wrong, echo and stuff. so what happened, the laser is fried isnt it? or it just needs calibration?

I'm not a hardware pro, but this sounds like a laser issiue to me. Which PS2 model do have? Did you use good quality media, e.g. Verbatim? Don't know if it can be calibrated, but I would give it a try.
Best make a thread in the hardware forum with as many details as possible. I'm sure someone can help you there.
