Hey guys, yesterday I tried running my PS2 and I got a black screen and I thought it was because of the av cables so I saw if there was anything wrong with them and found nothing.

Then, I thought maybe it was because of Crystal Chip so I pressed the reset button about 5 times and the default PS2 bootup appeared and was working fine, but I couldn't play any burned games; it would give me the red screen.

What's wrong with my Crystal Chip? How come bootmanager isn't loading

    Please help me, thanks

For some reason unknown, BootManager seems to "self-corrupt" or "self-delete", as i have also had it suddenly not work a few times as if it wasnt there anymore. But a quick fix is to reinstall the firmware & BM. The CC chip is designed to read the install CD and boot it, so you shouldnt get a red screen if the disc is compatible with your console and is burned properly.

If your BM Install disc doesnt boot up no matter how you tried, then there maybe be a more serious problem with the actual install, like a loose wire or other hardware issue with the chip/console.

Hey JNABK, thanks for the reply. I tried getting into recovery mode by booting up the PS2 and pressing the reset button 3 times, but all I got was a black screen and if I tried to reset it 5 times, the default Sony intro would appear and I would get the red screen saying to insert a ps1 or ps2 format disc.

    What should I do?

If the firmware has been corrupted/deleted, then you will get a blackscreen since there is nothing to boot.

Did you make a Installer CD and see if it autoboots?

    Yeah, I made r29 and r34 v2 modified, but it didn't work

I tried running it in both recovery mode and normal mode, but it didn't work; all I got was a black screen.

Also, I disabled the chip by pressing reset 5+ times and used Swap Magic to run the installer CDs and it still didn't work; all I got was a black screen.

Well before we conclude its a hardware issue, first lets determine if its the disc brand your burning.

Have you ever had that CD brand boot on the console before?

Do other discs boot, like originals?

What burn app did you use and what settings (if you manually set them) did you use to burn it?

You shouldnt need to use an alternative way to boot the Installer CD, as the chip is designed to recognise it as long as the chip itself is working properly. It doesnt need the PS2 Disc authentication, so a burned disc should work as is if it is properly burned and the media brand is compatible with your console.

Judging from your comment about SwapMagic booting it to a blackscreen, i am guessing its the media brand that is the problem, but its just a guess. Swapmagic booting should have worked if the disc is compatible, the lens is clean and the burn was correctly done.

Each ps2 console wears differently and so not all brands of backup disc are going to work, so you need to use the best quality media available to you. If after trying all these ways and still nothing, then you might want to look into having it serviced by whoever modded it or look at some diagrams if you want to try figuring out on your own if any hardware is out of place or damaged.

I have never used this CD brand on the PS2 before so I wouldn't know.

Yes, originals work perfectly, both CD and DVD.

    I used ImgBurn at 6x

    I have a PS2 v15 and I think v15 can read all types like DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+RW

Should I use a Sony DVD+R for it?

Also, I'm using Maxell CD-R for the installation CD.

Ive had success with Berkley & Jensen CDs, Sony CDs, TDK and even RadioShack brands, but i also have 5 consoles and some dont work on all 5 consoles, so i use a few brands.

Memorex, Maxell and Imation brands didnt work on any of my consoles. So see if you can get another brand Cd, as i dont know if the Installer works on a DVD or if the chip only recognises a CD.

I tried using verbatim CD-RW and it didn't work. I remember having trouble when I first installed crystal chip with the installation CD. Unfortunately, I had forgotten what I had done to fix the problem :/

CD-RW (and DVD-RW) should be avoided at all times, even for the very few PS2 consoles where such discs may appear to work reliably. But regardless of whether your console can boot such discs or not, it is certain that use of such discs will drastically shorten the lifetime of your CDVD lasers.

If that too was an attempt with a CD-RW disc, then the only obvious fix was to use a proper CD-R instead.

Verbatim is an excellent brand choice though, since Mitsubishi (owner of Verbatim) is one of the leading top quality disc manufacturers. So I always use Verbatim discs myself, both for CD-R and for DVD-R discs.

    Best regards: dlanor
