Sony blank media is top notch as well. And you can't go wrong with genuine Taiyo Yuden.

Yep, i'd agree to stay away from any -RW / +RW disc types, they are pretty hard on the lens.
if your in the US and near a WalMart, you can pick up a 10 Pack of TDK CD-R discs for $5.
What should I do now? I'm using Maxell CD-R and it's not working.
If anyone here has Swap Magic 3.6, could you please disable your Crystal Chip and bootup the installation cd via Swap Magic to confirm that its working because when I tried it, all I got was a black screen.
Thanks :)
Im gonna guess at this point its those Maxell CD-Rs not being compatible with your console, especially if you've never booted any backups on that brand before.
As i mentioned before, if using SwapMagic resulted in a blackscreen, its usually due to the media and/or the burn process. But if you have successfully burned discs before, im gonna go with the media brand as the problem.
You might also try cleaning the lens, maybe its dirty enough to prevent a backup from reading properly.
My lens is crystal clean since I have a slim v15 ps2 I can clean it very easily and I've already done so.
Would it work if I burned the installation files to a DVD?
You can give it a try, but i've never burned it to DVD, so im not sure if a DVD will be read by the chips BIOS or not, but i dont see why it wouldnt. If the chip doesnt boot it, maybe your SwapMagic DVD will.
Okay, I finally went out and got a 30w solder and fixed the black screen issue. It turned out that my W wire was disconnected.
After inspection, I saw that my SX wire was also disconnected so I soldered it and when I tried booting up the PS2, the crystal chip logo came on, but the drive was spinning really fast as though it was a CD and not a DVD.
I even tried popping in an original DVD and a CD, but it didn't work :(
I tried disabling the chip, but the drive still spun out of control.
Please help me :(
Also, I checked all the ribbons for the drive and saw that they were fine. Here is my PS2's diagram:

If possible, can you get a picture of your actual install, so we can see what it looks like. Perhaps you bridged a connection, used too thick AWG wire or crossed something. Make the pics as clear as possible and we might be able to see something you missed or is wrong.
Sorry, I don't have a camera, but I tried removing the wire to see if it would work, but it didn't. The drive motor still spun out of control. Also, when I pop in a CD, the motor doesn't spin or spins very slowly.
