DMS4Lite modded pstwo problem
DMS4Lite modded pstwo problem –
11-07-2005,04:22 PM
Hi,
A guy that wants me to help out with his broken pstwo mailed me this question. Does anyone have a clue whats wrong? (I'm not that experiensed with playstation 2 to be able to tell where this problem comes from)
"First time the problem showed up was when we were playing tekken5, the cd started to make twitch and couldn't read any more. I restarted it and haven't been able to start anything on it since. When you turn on the console the TV-screen is just black and you can hear the cd trying to read the cd for less than 1s. If you reset it the screen turns red."
its a DMS4lite
any ideas?

damn... never heard of that before.
uninstall the modchip and clean up (look for soldier splashes, bridging on ic pins, remove excess soldier with pump or wick/braid)
if it still doesnt work some component is damadged

allright.. I'll ask him to bring it over so that I can have a better look at it. Apparently he installed it himself, first install... but I worked for half a year (!?)
so It will be interesting.. I'll get back on this with a few photos and so.

okay. I have now removed the chip and it works. Hoping that it was a bad (it actually looked terrible) install and not the chip. We'll see tomorrow when I re-install it. I'll provide before and after pictures to show you the mess. =)

Have seen this problem before for anyone having similar problems. Can be caused by a few faults. If running the cdvd points under the chip they can rub on the board creating ground bounce and grounding issues, also the 'q' wire can cause problems and needs to be insulated against grounding when the case is put back together.
Hope this is of some help for someone

well.. that whole install was a mess... reinstalled it worked perfectly..... except for that the dvd wouldnt spin. It was a busted resistor and too much flux arround that area but I fixed it but then it wouldn't read the game.. So I removed all the resistors (the focus tracking ones) and I'm now waiting to get some new ones. So it will take a few days before I can tell if it really works or not.
Man.. if you have never soldered anything tiny before you shouldn't start by modding a ps2 that is for sure.. oh well. his loss.
