DMS 3 v9 upgrade = black screen –

Hi
I just got this PS2 SCPH-50004 with a DMS 3 v9 modchip installed. I opened it up to check it's not a clone or something, it's a real DMS 3 v9 and it had firmware 2.2 installed, so I decided to update it to 2.4 b7.
I downloaded the update from sksapps, burnt it to a CD and inserted it into my PS2. I followed the on-screen instruction to press x to flash the bios and after a few seconds it said "firmware upgraded please reset PS2".
After a reset I only get a black screen, though. If i put the chip into stealth mode the PS2 still boots, but obviously can't play backups or another update disk. I can't even get to the modchip menu when pressing all shoulder buttons during bootup.
Is the chip done for? What did I do wrong? Is there something I can do to bring it back to life?
Thanks for any advice
Horscht
EDIT: how long should it take to make an update?
