so i ordered a premod from xbox-modchips.com. matrix infinity, can get to menu fine. firmware is tricky to update because its a slimpstwo, but i got it and now im running version 1.75. i can play movies from both region 1 and 2. can play original US games. but no copies. what is wrong? i've tried changing all the settings, but to no avail. am going to try to flash the firmware to 1.68 and see if that works better. any suggestions?

Maybe some of the dvd points got loose in the mail.
    A,B,G,H,I ..

U will still get menu, u can still upgrade firmware by pressing and holding the power button, and it will also boot original games US (if console is US) if some of those wires are loose.

Those wires is used for booting media, and hence, backup wont work.
If this is a PAL console and USA games original plays fine, then ur doing something wrong during backup.

What happends if u try backup?
Does it come to "PLEASE INSERT PS2 DISC" very very fast?
If yes, wrong way to burn or dvd point loose.
Hello. This is my signature. Nice? yeah? Thanks!

well from what you said, it sounds like its just a loose wire.
my machine is a US model with region 1 coding. i'm currently living in japan, so its possible that things came loose in the long shipping route. i've had a ps2 modded before, but it died after a year and so i went for a premod. the backups i used were the same ones i've had for a year or two, so its not how im burning them. when i try a backup of a game, it behaves as if the ps2 has no mod. the PS booting screen comes up, then it goes to the red cube screen once it spins the disk a little. but it still reads dvd's from both region 1 and 2 and backups of my dvd's. its just the copied games. which contacts should i look at?

If you can operate a small screwdriver and not shock anything with ESD, test these points here with a continuity/voltmeter. Regardless of where the wires are actually mounted, match the letters on the chip with the pin numbers given. A magnifying glass comes in handy!
