SX spot in MI
SX spot in MI –

How important is the SX spot on the MI chip? What is it? I was working with a v12 board and the little chip piece that looks like a fuse I'm supposed to solder to came off completely... so I just jumped it... what do yah think the out come will be.
PS
by jump I mean I used one wire to connect where both areas where the chip was together and then soldered that to the MI chip

SX is for PS1 backups, the little component you lifted is a small capacitor, PS1 may not work until it's replaced, but for PS2 all should be fine.

So should I jump it? Or just leave it alone... I jumped it and right now when I try to read the firmware upgrade it's telling me it cannot read the disc... would that make a difference or would it be something different causing this problem?

Alson I didn't install the laser fix yet... but I thought that would only lead to your laser burning out eventually... I checked and resoldered point A&B and the others look strongly in there

I had the same cap lift on my v14(Crystal Chip) PS2, seems to behave fine with or without it except for PS1, would think it's better not to jump the gap if you can't replace it.
Check over your soldering, especially the via points, make sure nothing is shorting to adjacent copper and everything has a neat, firm connection.
The laser fix can probably wait until after you've finished the mod, but personally I'd just install it now, better safe than sorry, so many v12 horror stories out there.

I haven't checked the points yet... but I just tried a regular PS2 game and then a DVD and it tells me that there's no data on the disc or that it just can't read it... could that be the laser or the chip?
Also, can I take the laser assembly with the three ribbons from a v14 and swap it for the v12; I'm sure it won't take care of the laser problem but if it's burnt out are they a compatable swap?

Good news the v14 laser is a good swap with the v12; Now my PS2 plays PS2 games and DVD's but no backups and won't read the firmware upgrade CD... what now?
