On the official infinity team website they mention that there's soon gonna be a software cd that recognizes if a modchip is original or a clone. I dont know how old that announcement is but i need to ask if that time has come. Cause i need to know if i have a original or a clone and i want to avoid opening it.

Where i got it from they argued that it is original but since i could not upgrade it that heavy suspicion that it is not.

There it says it on the bottom of this picture http://www.infinitymod.com/images/Fake2MXL2.JPG

Actually there's a incredibly easy and failsafe way to figure out if you have a real M.I. mod or some Modbo crap...

Put your (COPIED) game with some video introduction on the PS2 and boot it up... I know that final Fantasy XII or some GTA series disc is a great test because they tell you that thre DVD tray is open, at the screen.

In the middle of a movie you open the tray/lid and wait the disc stop. Then close it again.

If it's a real M.I. the game will resume where it stopped.
If it's a modbo or similar crap it will require a reset to start again.

Ok so i tried it on the intro scene just before the new game and load game options appear.

Although Opening the tray doesn't result in a message being shown as you mentioned, but after 2 secs the video gets to a halt and it freezes to a static image. Closing the tray makes it continue though....

Dont know though if that scene qualifies as the one you mentioned. I'm not sure it's a video but still what does this tells us?

On the other hand pressing and holding triangle and circle before i boot the console doesnt bring to the infinity menu, so that a reason that the chip is most probably a clone.

    What do you say?

It's a original chip with very early firmware.... (1.3x is when the menu was introduced.)
It has a key to start the "infinity manager" which is triangle...
Doesn't support DEV1 as we know (DMS3 style, boot folder)
You should update it to 1.93 to have the current feature set.

And I just noticed you're right... Load a save and while playing eject the disc. Then the game will complain about the disc being removed. It does not while on the title screen, though. My bad.

Last time i tried to update nothing happened. About a year ago when the chip was installed i tried making the upgrade but there was no progress made. Maybe i'll try again.

I dont have a save file for ff12 since i have not started it yet, but i noticed what you're talking about on god of war 2. When you open the tray, be it on a video sequence or in the game. IT pauses and prompts you to re-insert the disc. Doing so the game resumes. (In the case of the initial video though the sequence was skipped, and resumed having control with the character).

Anyways i'll try upgrading once more and hope that this time something different happens.I will post back at a later time.

It could be other kind of chip ....
If it's an DMS3 (With updated firmware) hold all the top buttons and turn the PS2 on. If it's a DMS3 you will see the DMS3 settings screen.

If it's a DMS4 holding square and circle shows it's settings screen.

It can also be a Crystal Chip but on this case the only thing you can notice without the CC BootManaget is that the PS2 never shows the "Playstation 2" logo while the CC chip is enabled.
