new problem, different ps2 –

a friend asked me to take a look at his PS2 V7. It looks like a magic 3 chip, the mod was done in Iraq while he was deployed there. It has worked for about 2 years. The problem is that it doesn't seem to recognize any games, only music. The DVD drive doesn't even spin up. Any suggesstions.

The laser is probably worn out. Clean the top and bottom lense of the laser. Adjust the dvd pot down 50-100 ohms. That might fix the problem. Does it even read originals?

doesn't even read originals. I have adjusted the pot down to 600 ohms, and still nothing. It won't even read cd games. only music cd's. I have cleaned the laser and done minor mechanical adjustments.

Ok, I think you should put the dvd pot back to it's original value and try removing the chip. See if the console can read originals dvd then.

I can try that. I did try lifting the chip off of the board but it is glued. and the pot is back in the original position. you thinking the chip suddenly went bad?

I honestly think it's the DVD patch wires. Check the applicable and shorten the amount exposed: B-G-I-A-H-SCEX.

Actually I just finished removing the mod and trying an original game. Same problem, nothing works but the music cds. I am reinstalling the mod right now. I did check all fuses, coils, and I am going to try adjusting the DVD pot down to about 400 ohms just to see. Any other suggestions?

Sounds like new laser time. DVD pot of 400 ohms and it's still not reading means laser is worn (this is when the chip is not even installed.) I bet if you tried a cd-based ps2 game it'll work.

I actually did try a CD based ps2 game and no luck. Should I order the entire DVD drive or just the laser. I am nervous just buying the laser with out knowing exactly what is wrong. But I will still be at it a while. I will keep you posted. Thanks for the help
