    "November 27, 2005
    V14 Upgrade for Infinity.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Analysis and development for the V14 model is finally complete.
Due to changes in the V14 hardware the old recovery mode was not compatibe and had to be redesigned.

The new color code for this Infinity will be GREEN, and the V14 firmware will be already on board of the
    Actel processor.
The GREEN DOT Infinity are thus fully V1-V14 compatible and 100% stable, and are now being shipped
    our resellers.
Installation manual and new firmware upgrade for V1-V14 consoles will be online soon."

Not sure if anyone can really answer this, but it sounds like they are shipping a new firmware and not hardware, since you cannot update the firmware on a chip with older firmware while inside a v14 could I not install my Orange dot in a lower version, update to the latest firmware, and transfer that chip into my v14? Maybe somebody who knows exactly what's going on could answer me, or I'll wait until somebody else tries this. Though I'll probably just end up using this orange for someone else and get a green for myself.

from what luke at matrix has said it sounds like the orange dot will only be compatable to v13 so for v14 users they will need the green dot hardware.

yeah you should be able to use the chip in anohter console and upgrade the firmware to install on your v14. you might send the matrix team an email on that to get a confirmation whether that will work. so i wonder when the new firmware is going to be available for download

It might be a situation where you can upgrade the firmware of your non-green dot to the V14 compatible firmware while its in the v14 by useing Dev1 mode like they did when the V12 came out. But it sounds like the the factory flash an the main processor was updated as well.

Due to changes in the V14 hardware the old recovery mode was not compatibe and had to be redesigned.
So even if the old MI's are upgradeable with the new firmware (if at all) the recovery mode might still be buggy.

I hope you can update the old matrix infinities, just as we had to do with the slimlines to upgrade them to V1.36 via memory card upgrade.

    They say:

Due to changes in the V14 hardware the old recovery mode was not compatibe and had to be redesigned.

In the general firmware instructions I found:

"- NOTE : You can always recover from a bad flash by hoding the reset button until
==== the blue eject light turns on. This will let you boot the upgrade disc to reflash your Infinity."

So when the ps2 does not take recordables, you can still boot the upgrade firmware on CD-R recordables, by holding the power button for let's say 3 seconds.

What they say is that this does not work with the V14.

So my conclusion from this, is that the memory card upgrade for the old matrix infinities should work in a V14.

I am hoping for more news from the Matrix Team soon these days.

there are changes made in the APA so it is always better to use a new infinity for the v14/v15
I am sure it would be possible to get a older one running on a v14 but in the tests the matrix made on them was not that stable

thats why they decided to upgrade the infinity to a newer version
in my opinion not a big problem
i use the older ones for older ps2/pstwo versions (still enough to do)
it is only your old stock you have to get rid off because when you order new infinity's they will be compatible from v1 till v15

people who want to lose there old stock i have no problem of buying them if the price is right !

Yeah I just got an email and they said they had to redesign part of the code in the Actel chip and they recommend using only the new greent dot chip on v14's. So I'll order one whenever I see them on Divineo, like it was said, not a huge deal

    I think I understand it.

Let's say you take an old matrix infinity, upgrade it to the V14 firmware in a V1-V13, and then install it in a V14, that the recovery mode does not work.

So if the upgrade to later firmware revisions, will fail, due to bad CD-R quality or turning off the ps2 while upgrading, it cannot be recovered by holding the standby button for 2-3 seconds when booting up with the firmware CD-R.

    I understand that:

    1) The 8 pin chip, contains the firmware
    2) The Actel chip contains minimum piece of firmware, to boot CD-R's for upgrading. And this piece had to be changed for the V14.

The problem I think is that when we install an old Matrix Infinity in a V14 with the new firmware for V14, that recovery mode is not working anymore.

The circumstance under which you need this, is a corrupted firmware in the MI.
From my experience this only happened when:

    1) Somebody used bad CD-R media to burn the firmware on, and then upgrades it and it fails to upgrade.
    2) Somebody turns off the pstwo before the upgrade completes

If this is the only issue, then I can use the old matrix infinities.
I do not think this will lead to too much problems in the future.

You can upgrade the old MI to the V14 firmware by 2 ways:

    1) Install the old MI in a V1-V13, then upgrade to V14 firmware, deinstall it, and install it in a V14.
    2) Install the old MI in a V14, and use the memory card upgrade method.

In both cases you need a second (V1-V13) ps2 with matrix infinity installed, or modchip who can start applications.

Can anyone confirm if we only miss the recovery method with old Matrix Infinities, used in a V14 ?

    Mabcom, maybe you ?
