just an update,
checked the fuses and they seem to be ok, and have checked the psu and that is working fine aswell.
i then took the mod out and its still doing the same thing. This leads me to believe that:
1. One of the Fuses have gone
2. Solder Splash - somewhere but i cant find it
3. Eject ribbon faulty
can anyone tell me the the procedure of checking the fuses? im using this diagram as reference: http://www.psrtech.co.uk/fuses/v5_gh-015_fuses.jpg
set my multimeter to Ohms and measured across the fuses, what reading should i be getiting? i have been told that getting no reading at all is bad, and getting any reading is good. if you have a look on the diagram the values are in the red balloons, im not getting the same values for some of them, does that mean the fuses have gone?
many thanks.

Sounds like a short between POWER and GROUND or a bridge on the CD/DVD wires. Carrefully check and clean all flux. Even with a multimeter you cannot read a short or bridge caused by flux.
