I fitted a Matrix Infinity in a v5 PS2 and it now won't boot any kind of disc, DVD, CD game or movie. I can access the Infinity menu and make changes and the Matrix logo appears at boot up. It has v1.5 firmware.

I then removed the chip and the console started working fine again. After looking on the web I found some photos from other installers and have re-installed it the same, keeping all wiring as short as possible. It still behaves the the same...

I also tried adjusting the cog wheel on the drive several clicks either way as I have done on other consoles in an attempt to get it to boot CDR or DVDR media but as it doesn't even boot genuine Sony PS2 discs then I figured this was in vain.

The disc will spin up and the laser makes a noise but the console just drops to the browser screen and if X is pressed it says 'reading disc'. Eventually it gives up and the disc stops spinning.

I am starting to think my chip is faulty as the console works fine when it is removed.

    # EDIT: I've now verified my chip is ok by swapping it with a known good one in a v4 console. The chip works 100% in the v4 console and boots all media and disc types.

What I don't understand now is why it won't work in the v5 console... this won't boot any type of disc with the chip installed. If I remove it, games and DVD movies load fine.

I blew a "perfectly healthy" japanese V5 a few months ago installing a MI on it. The mod fried it. No biggies. I just fit a US mobo on it, changed the top cover for a US cover and sold it used. The mobo became scrap for parts. Some V5s are just damn faulty and MI don't work properly with them. Not really fault of the MI but it's something that eventually gives me trouble. In a random basis.

Found the problem... can't believe I had missed plugging in a small ribbon cable from the sled motor at the top left of the board! DOH! - it had got tucked down by the motor and I neglected to plug it in... TWICE...

Now it works fine and boots ALL types of disc. Just goes to show it doesn't matter how fine the soldering is if you don't put it back together right.
