    some background:

    I got this V10 unit from a friend of mine whos brother thought he could mod it. It ended up going back three times cause it stopped working. When he got it to me and I opened it up, I saw this;

    Not the wire you should be using imho, and certainly not if you are soldering on chiplegs. When I removed his mess, three of these chiplegs just came off because they were damaged by his soldering job... not the end of the world, that can be fixed.

    I took my trusty Dremel tool and grinded some of the chips ceramic housing off to expose copper and proceeded to use 30awg wire to fabricate some legs.

    No shorts to adjacent legs, triple checked that.. looked the business.
    So I went on and started the modjob..

    Did the Romeo Mod, just to be safe (it hadn't been done yet)

    but now I have the following:

    when I plug the unit in, the standby light turns red very shortly and then the green led turns on aswell (so both are on and after a few resets it goes into orange/yellow, checked ribbon, it's not damaged). When I turn on the unit by pressing the powerbutton it turns on (at first with green and red after a few resets orange led and then it stays orange, even when in standby), blue led's on, the fan starts working, but I have no image on the screen but do see a flash on the screen saying to me it's getting something. Whenever I press the eject button, it takes a very long time for the unit to open the tray, all this time the blue led is flashing. The same happens when I want to close the tray. led flashes takes a while, then closes. After that two things happen randomly:

    1:The laser ticks (you can see the lens being pulled to one side insode the unit but no laserlight) and the spindle motor spins a few times..
    2: it closes the tray and goes into standby / shuts down.

    Removing the Romeo mod made a change: the laser doesn't do jack, not even the snakedrive will turn. when doing the romeo mod again everything works like mentioned above.

    All fuses check out, it does not seem to be a fried LA (tray opening, laser moving etc.. but I'm not sure though.. )

    The install checks out too, no shorts, all points check out, no soldersplashes or residue flux (don't use flux, but maybe some resin residu from the tin)cleansed all places where I soldered with alcohol and a very soft toothbrush. Changed the 3.3V point, made sure I had no cold solders anywhere the whole shizzle...

    I'm at a loss here..

    Is there anything I'm missing here? A spot that his brother F'ed up and I'm not seeing? a resistor he blew?
    My repair to the legs? some wires? blown LA that I'm totally missing?

    Anyone with a bright idea?

    If ha;f the LA fried you would still be able to eject the tray and if the whole LA fried the unit would just give you flashing green then red and no video.

    Sounds like the DVD controller got damaged.
