Many PS2s have serious problems with burned dual layer discs.

For example, I currently have 3 PS2 consoles here and for these dual layer problems vary greatly.
One console runs them without any problem. (Assuming high quality media of course.)
One console barely boots, and has horrible problems sometimes requiring sector access retries that last for minutes, and end in failure.
The third console does not notice the disc as present in any way. It is completely unreadable, just as if I had put in a dummy piece of plastic.

For all of these tests I used top quality Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. When using any lower quality discs, or any DVD-R DL discs, the failure was total on all of my consoles.

Also, even on the console where the good discs work, I have to assume that continued use of such DL media will significantly shorten the laser lifetime. So I simply don't use them at all for normal gameplay.

The best method of all for running DL games is to install them with USBUtil on a PC HDD, and then run them on the PS2 using "Open PS2 Loader" (aka: OPL) to run the games from the PC over LAN using SMB filesharing.

OPL has automagic DL support so nothing special needs to be done on that account. You just rip the original disc to an ISO and then install that ISO to the fileshare folder on the PC using USBUtil 2.0 (or the new 2.1, if you can handle its Spanish menu).

    Best regards: dlanor

I also have this game, and from HDD it isnt working - both discs. I also can get those discs to work with HDL

Too bad, but not surprising. Like I said, I only have DL working properly on one console out of three, so the odds really are quite bad for everyone.

I don't see the connection... Why should it not work on OPL just because it is new ?

OPL itself is still so new that NO game manufacturers have had time to invent any specific countermeasures against it. Some old countermeasures against HDL would probably affect OPL too, if running the game from HDD. But that need not affect OPL running the game from USB or over LAN. And since LAN is faster I recommend trying that first, falling back on the slower USB interface only if LAN fails.

Whichever method you use, OPL needs no special patching for DL support, so just rip the original disc to a normal DL ISO without patching it in any way, and then install that with USBUtil for use by OPL, either on a USB device or a PC fileshare. (Just be sure that you have both layers, as some ripping tools won't do that.)

    Just for a comparison:
I've used the DL game "Xenosaga Ep1: Der Wille zur Macht" through OPL both from USB and over LAN, and the gameplay works fine both ways. But when running the game from USB the FMVs are hopelessly slow and stuttered. When using LAN on the other hand FMVs are quite fluent, almost as with DVD disc, though with occasional lag-induced pausing (to catch up with the file access). But there are none of the stutters that always mar FMVs played from USB.

    Best regards: dlanor
