My console is a jap v5, with an MI greendot in it.

    It only boots:

DVD videos (originals, single and dual layer)
    - will boot on 'auto' boot mode

    PS1 backups (I no longer have PS1 originals, so I couldn't try)
    - will only boot if I 'force boot' by holding circle

    Music CDs

    Matrix FW upgrade CD
    - took me a few tries, despite using a good media and burning it at the slowest rate possible. It's the same media I used to burn my PS1 backup.

My original PS2 games are PAL, and they won't boot.

My dev2 is set to DMS HDD Explorer and I can't even install new apps on it. The bugger just won't properly read the cd. And what perplexs me is the fact that this is the same cd that I used to burn my PS1 backups.

At one period, even the PS2 splash screen with the boxes became 'faulty'. More boxes appeared. These new boxes are only visible when I try to boot the medias that won't boot.

And interestingly, I fixed the splash screen the other day by... randomly changing the settings on the MI configuration page. Yup.

Does it sound like a faulty chip?

Should I mail the MI team? Their page seems dead.

p/s: yes I know I have another thread here. I wanna start fresh.

I found someone who's in the same predicament as I am.

And surprise surprise, we bought our first batch greendot together, from the same vendor.

So what can I do if it's a problematic chip?

Can it be exchanged or something?

yo bro, yup i have the same problem u have.
i tried booting several medias with the top case open.
seems that the dvd/cd drive spins upon insertion but stops spinning after a few seconds. This doesn't happen with music cd or movie dvd so plays well.
can it be said the medias failed to authenticate and can anyone help point to the reasons.
our installer is also baffled by this. he said no cold solders.
which /pointsleads are cd/dvd on MI? i might try sesoldering the points. btw mine green dot MI on NTSCJ 50006.
    cheerios

Finally found your way here I see.

    spedmetal,
It's definitely not a weak laser. I already mailed the matrix team and according to them my problem sounds like a bad installation.

Luke from the Matrix team said that he might be able to have a better understanding of what the issue might be if I can show him a picture of the installation. I've yet to do that though, kinda busy.

keledek, why don't you take a picture of yours first since you already opened the console?

Bro maybe later will snap some pictures. anyway as i understand no way to confirm cold solder by merely looking at the solder points. one would need a multimeter watchamacallit. i believe ourinstaller would have checked it.

    Hello again guys.

I'm supposed to show a picture of my installation to the Matrix Team, remember?
Let me refresh you. Here's my problem in a nutshell: backup ps2 games won't boot, dvd movies boot. but last time the ps2 games would boot.

Well, I finally got the time to take off my console, but I'm charging my digicam right now.
But at the moment I can tell you this, there's a tape on my chip. Is that normal or what??? I don't know what kind of tape it is, but it seems like those normal white tape.

    Alright, the pics are up!

This is a jap v5 board.
btw in the second pic there's some sort of rubbery thing besides the big 'square' where you can see the camera flash. what's that? it doesn't look like a 'default' thing. and it's on top of something.
