USB HDD simulation
USB HDD simulation –
04-18-2005,11:53 PM
Please don?t kill me because of this stupid question and my English. Could we simulate an USB HDD to PS2 by using some software on PC with PC ? PS2 connected via USB cable ? We already had USBAdvance played games via USB port, so can we run a host software on PC mounted to the game ISO file (like Daemon) and it will act like an enclosured USB HDD whenever PS2 has a request for data from USB HDD. I have a USB cable for data transfering from PC to PC and love to use a shared HDD rather than dedicated HDD for PS2, think it will be helpful. Could we do that? Is it feasible idea? If yes, I think we just need to modify PC side not PS2 side.
Thx for your reading.

The question is not stupid, though it may be unrealistic to expect such a development shortly, as it would be a tricky project.

Yes, it would be possible, but probably quite difficult.

I agree with most of that, but I must add that I think it would be best to use virtual drive files, so as NOT to allow this software to directly access the physical partitions on PC drives, for several reasons.
One reason is that it would simply be too dangerous to use the physical drives, as a bug in the PS2-side software might crash a whole HD for the PC. Crashing a virtual file instead would not have any effect on the PC, except for this USB host software. In other respects the PC would be unaffected.
Another reason is that FAT32 is not the best partition type for modern PCs, and using virtual drive files instead can work equally well on any partition type, such as NTFS. (Still using FAT32 inside the virtual drives of course.)
Could we do that? Is it feasible idea? If yes, I think we just need to modify PC side not PS2 side.
I agree that with suitable host software on a PC, the existing USBadvance should work, so no new PS2 software would be necessary. And developing such software for the PC is quite feasible. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to happen... That depends mostly on whether or not some people (with the necessary skills) find such a project interesting enough to spend their free time on.

Why not use the lan port , CH7000X series has it. I think it will be faster than using USB port ~

The point of this is to use the existing USBA software though, using LAN would require a rewrite of HDL or some hardcore HDL hacking (which probably won't happen).

Maybe not modify the HDL, but also need to build a tooling which be a bridge between PC and PStwp. Very sorry , I am not a programmer, but just want to offer some idea for improving PStwo IDE HDD.

Yes, you can say that.... tool to be a bridge between PC and PStwo. I'm not in right position to lead this topic
this topic is not a request for PC daemon tools but hopefully someone here knew something I didn't in an effort to make this dream comes true. (googled for hours... there's no such programs on PC like this)
