Did you format the drive as required ? To a single FAT32 partition ?
Multiple partitions do not work, and neither do other partition types.
As for using HDLoader, that can only be done if you connect the driver directly by IDE interface to your PS2 (or its network adaptor rather). If you have an old 'fat' PS2, then that is the best thing to do, and use the USB box only for connecting the drive to your PC (when/if you want to do that). If you have a new 'slim' PStwo, then you can't use HDLoader without extensive modifications to your hardware, so that's probably not an option...
Finally, about the slow installation speed. That is probably because your PC has the USB devices optimized for safe quick removal (a WinXP default setting), which reduces the speed horribly. If you optimize them for performance instead, the speed will rise by a huge factor. (I'm not kidding when I say mine got appx 100 times faster !!!) Just be careful to use the 'removal' gadget from the system tray, or the 'eject' function of that drive, before disconnecting the drive, to ensure that all data is flushed from cache to disk before removal. Otherwise you WILL lose data.

Im using a old playstation the fat one. im using usb extreme since its connected through the usb ports but still cant find my hard drive im thinking about opening it up and seeing if i can take the hard drive out of it but i have no clue if that would work and then i was gonna plug it into the back of my ps2 with my network adapter but i dont wanna take it apart and then it not work and not be able to put it back together

Even so, connecting the HDD directly to the IDE interface of your network adaptor will allow you to play games at much better speed than would be possible through the USB ports.
It will also allow you to use upgraded versions of HDL, with all the new patches to extend compatibility, far beyond what is possible with USBextreme. (Even the original HDL is more compatible than USBextreme.)
Lots of people with the same kind of hardware you have use it that way, putting the HDD in the USB cabinet only when connecting it to the PC to install more games, using programs such as WinHIIP. Doing this is valuable for many reasons, mainly the higher installation speed, but for some people also because it eliminates the need for a healthy laser on the PS2. (My own PS2 laser can no longer read ANY DVD discs.)
The only real drawback of putting the HDD inside the PS2 is if it is of a kind that gets very hot in operation, as that might shorten the life of your PS2 laser.
