A Little confused Sorry
A Little confused Sorry –

Hi
I have been reading through thwe forum and are a little confused (NOOB).
I have (3 weeks) a V7 PS2, just got FreeMcBoot (thanks Spud42) and now it looks like I can run an external HDD through USB ?
Do I need to put something else on FreeMcBoot, or how do I check it has the right file ?
Do I need to run ESR, or is that only if I want to play Disks ?
Sorry, I did a search but still confused.
cheers
Matt

Running games from USB requires a special application elf. (elf files on PS2 correspond to exe files on a PC) This application is known either as USBAdvance (homebrew) or USBExtreme (commercial) and those two are in fact identical in origin.
If Spud42 installed it for you, then you can find it somewhere on the memory card, and most likely inside the folder "mc0:/BOOT/" since that is the standard location for the other programs normally installed together with FMCB, though USBAdvance is not included in that standard group of elfs.
The filename he used may of course also vary, though such names normally include the letters "USBA" somewhere.
To check for it there are two ways. If he added it to the FMCB launch menu, then you can simply scroll through that menu to find the entry. Such an entry will not be visible in that menu unless the elf file is properly installed in the configured location. So if you see it, then it is ready for use, except that you probably don't have any games on your USB drive yet. (USBAdvance can only run them, but not install them. That is done by other programs.)
If you don't see USBAdvance in the FMCB menu it may still be on the memory card, but then you need to look for it, and either reconfigure FMCB to use it or launch it by other means such as uLaunchELF (aka: uLE). That program is also what you need to use when looking for files on PS2 media, as it contains a subprogram named "FileBrowser" which allows inspection and maintenance of files on all PS2 storage media. That subprogram is already preconfigured on the default menu of uLE, so you can find it and use it with minimal effort.
Do I need to run ESR, or is that only if I want to play Disks ?
ESR is only for burned DVD discs (with the special ESR patch).

matty you did not ask for usbadvance. i would have put it on for you no problem!!! as amp and dlanor said use ule to copy the usbadvance elf file to the mc0 or mc1 /boot folder. or as they said you can put it on a usb key and start it via ule. i.e. start ule browse to the mass then start usbadvance. i thought you said you had a network adaptor? if ypu do then hdloader is much better than usbadvance.
