Is this even possible?
Is this even possible? –

I've been using fmcb + some emulators for a while now, and my pendrive is getting clogged up.
I was wondering if this is possible:
I've got an unused/unformatted 120gb Buffalo usb hd
Will it be possible to have fmcb/uLE + emulators to run from this (ie, have the hd doing what the pendrive is doing right now?)
Then i could free up the pendrive
I've already tried once. uLE can detect + open the hd when it's unformatted, but as soon as it is formatted to NTFS, it can't be detected (but it is detected on sms, but files can't be detected on it).
If i'm being stupid can somebody tell me
Or if it is possible please tell me how
If it can be done, here is somemore info:
Slim PS2 (SCPH-70003)
All applications (uLE, FMCB, SMS, ESR + emulators are run from my pendrive, the CNF's for these are also on the pendrive)
Any help apprecciated

Have you tried formatting the USB HD as FAT32? Unless the uLE USB drivers were updated to handle NTFS, which I doubt, it can only recognize FAT 16 and 32.
Hardware: PS2 v7 (GH-022) NTSC | Crystal Chip 2.0 Pro SLE | Sony Network Adapter | 300GB Segate HDD
Software: uLaunchELF 4.40 | HDLoader 0.8c | HDL_Dump 0.8.6+GUI | SMS 2.9 (Rev.3)
My Projects: uLaunchELF - skins/template | skin template readme | documentation (contributor)

Also the USB HD has to be compatible with USB 1.1 since the ps2 can only support 1.1. Some external hard drives only support USB 2.0.

ps2dragon is right, format it in fat32. But windows won't let you do it for hard disc that large, so get swiss knife utility.
It's free, get it here:

I finally managed to do it.
I tried to format it with DISK FORMATTER (That came with the HD) and Swissknife V3, and although both said it had formatted to FAT32, it hadn't.
So i had to do the next best thing + use windows to partion the drive into 4 partions then format each 1 to FAT32 and now it works.
I think it may be a problem with the actual HD it's self, so may get a new one soon if this one packs up.
Many thanks for the help guys!

No. It is a problem specific to the Windows OS and some of the utilities for it.
The Windows OS simply refuses to allow FAT formats on large discs, even though it has all the device drivers needed. It is not unable to use FAT32 format on those discs, but merely refuses to give you the option to format them that way, insisting that you should use NTFS instead.
And some of the utilities for Windows that are intended to allow full user control also fall down on the job, being so heavily influenced my m$ that they probably haven't even tested FAT32 formatting for the last several versions of those utilities. And we all know the odds of untested software features working properly... (Somewhere in the range between 'zilch' and 'no way'...)
But there are utilities that can do the job properly and fortunately they are quite easy to get hold of. One of the simplest tools for this purpose is the command-line utility "ul_format.exe" that was part of the original USBAdvance release. The PC-side software for USBExtreme also included such formatting capability, but has the disadvantage of only giving access to a limited set of USB drives (none which are classed as 'removable media').
Your easiest option guaranteed to succeed is to find a USBAdvance release package complete with the PC-side tools, and then to use "ul_format.exe" on the drive. But before you do that you should use the Windows disk manager to repartition the drive to a single partition again (in NTFS format of course), as ul_format can not repartition a drive. It can only reformat an existing partition. But it can do this, reformatting it to FAT32, regardless of the partition size. So this is exactly what you need.

I managed to get a copy of USBAdvance, but when I attempt to run ul_install.exe, it just flashes on the screen then instantly closes.
So I tried the USBExtreme pc tool, and when attempting to format, I get 'format failed' popping up.

you have to use MS DOS
its already mention in the guide :
After extracted the USBeXtreme Client software, go to “Start”à”Run”,
http://www.hdadvance.com/usb_extreme_how-to-use.htm
So I tried the USBExtreme pc tool, and when attempting to format, I get 'format failed' popping up
USBExtreme never failed me down but as dlanor said the but has the disadvantage of only giving access to a limited set of USB drives (none which are classed as 'removable media').
and is your hdd detectable by Windows ? check disk Management
are you able to format it as NTFS ? via Windows ?
btw : moved to USB HDD Discussion

Are you clicking on the ul_install.exe trying to run the program?
If you do it that way of course it will flash and then close..
That program is to be ran from the .cmd line only...
