I ask because I bought a 3.5 usb enclosure for my slim ps2.I can't get it to work,I have it set to master and it is formatted to fat32. Does it need to be set to slave or cable select? The reason I bought the enclosure is cause I have so many 40gb hardrives laying around lol, and I could give my slim some much needed storage space.I go to mass in Ulaunch and nothing shows up. Any help is appreciated

Most would have to be set for MASTER on the HDD, but I've heard of a few that require cable select. Also, there are a few enclosures that doesn't work with the ps2 at all. but it's few of them. you might have been unlucky enough on that to get one of the non working ones.

    That is the normal usage.

Does it need to be set to slave or cable select?
Not likely. Every IDE bus needs a master drive in order to work properly, so with a single drive on the bus that one has to be 'master'. As for cable select, I see no reason why the enclosure would demand that. But you should be able to check that in the user manual or other docs for the enclosure you bought.

Another possible reason is that the enclosure you have is incompatible with the USB drivers of uLE, just like some USB memory sticks are. For some of those cases it may help to use alternate USB drivers, which you can store as normal files in the uLE folder, or in "mc0:/SYS-CONF/", and then configure the uLE 'Startup Settings...' to use those drivers for 'USBD IRX:' and 'USB Mass IRX:'. One alternate set of drivers can be downloaded from this link.

    Just a question (off-topic, sorry.).
I heard, that it is possible to use 2 HDDs in Linux (on IDE).
    Does someone test it?
I assume it works, but I didn't test it.

@unclebob69: Use external USB-Drivers. It should work (try a few USBD.IRXs and a few USBM.IRXs).

Here is a link to the one I bought:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817146307

I tried the alternate USBD IRX and the USB Mass IRX in your link but ulaunch still showed nothing under mass. The enclosures lights don't even go on, normaly the blue light indicates the HDD is on and the orange/red light flashes when it is reading and writing. The drive works fine in my pc so I know it's not broken. I notice usbadvance doesn't see it either but the blue light will go on in the enclosure. I have about a 5 year maxtor drive in there. The documention doesn't say whether it needs master or cable select but like you said i don't see why it would need anything other than master.
Where can I find more drivers to experiment with to see if I can get it to work? Are those drivers just ones for the pc or are the special in some way?

EDIT: On a side note those drivers you provided made my 2gb Kingston data traveler work but the 8gb kingston data traveler still doesn't

It's interesting that you got some difference in response between using USBAdvance (very old USB drivers) and uLE (newer drivers). At least this proves that the physical USB connection is working.

I have about a 5 year maxtor drive in there. The documention doesn't say whether it needs master or cable select but like you said i don't see why it would need anything other than master.
The documentation doesn't say how the equipment can be used !?!
In that case it serves no purpose whatever...

But I still suggest you reread it again, in case you missed something earlier.

Where can I find more drivers to experiment with to see if I can get it to work?
I've made a small collection of four older USB-mass drivers for uLE in the LaunchELF subforum, in the thread for various support files. You'll find it in the fifth post of that thread, which you can reach through this link. Each of those mass drivers will work with the internal default USBD driver of uLE, but you can also try using them with the USBD driver you downloaded earlier.

Are those drivers just ones for the pc or are the special in some way?
I'm not sure what you mean by that question. Normally you don't install special USB drivers for a PC, but rely on the drivers supplied with the operating system.

Possibly you meant to write "drives" rather than "drivers" in your last sentence above, in which case I'd have to reply that all USB drives are intended primarily for normal PCs, but if they support not just the latest USB 2.0 protocol but also USB 1.1, then they should also work with a PS2. However, if a drive has no USB 1.1 support, or a faulty implementation of that, then it has no chance of working with a PS2.

EDIT: On a side note those drivers you provided made my 2gb Kingston data traveler work but the 8gb kingston data traveler still doesn't
Kingston drives have always been a problem, apparently due to inconsistencies in their implementation of USB 1.1 protocol. So far no drivers for the PS2 have been able to work with all Kingston drives. Adapting the drivers to work well with one of their drives always causes some other of their drive models to fail.

Well I tried those older usb drivers and I tried cable select as a last resort but it's no good. Thanks for the help dlanor, I guess mine is just incompatible with the ps2.

Hey guys, I have a question in line w/ the thread topic, so I didn't think a new thread would be necessary...

Does usb powered externals work for ps2? I'm trying to buy a case for my 2.5" drive (http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/230), but I don't know if the ps2 will feed power to the usb port. Thanks.

It will deliver some power (required for memory sticks), but with limited drive capability (not sure of the wattage).

I very much doubt that powering an external hdd drive through USB power is a good idea, even if you can find one that doesn't need too much power. And the one you specified above would probably blow a fuse in the PS2. Even though that page says nothing precise about the power consumption, it does state "Aluminum Casing Cools Down Your Hard Drive" as one of its advantages, implying that it runs plenty hot to need that cooling, meaning that it sucks a lot of energy out of the USB socket.

Are you referring to Western Digital drives needing cable select? We were talking about that in one of the threads, but then the site's database was lost. I think Slicer or someone replied and confirmed that was the case. I don't see how a USB enclosure would matter, as it's just the interface for the hard drive. I'm not sure if it's all Western Digital's though, as I never had one, but I would think all other hard drives should be set to Master.
