    Hello,

I've been so focused on PS2 modding I never even looked into the possibility of modding my PSOne (small new unit).

But if I can get a mod chip for my PSOne for Like $10-15 USD, I may just do it. Which one can I get that works best, and from who?

    Thanks,

    Neofree

Actually what you should really do it build a JDM pic programmer. It will allow you to make your own psx chips and then you cal upgrade them and such. The cost for the programmer is like $5-$10 if you user mosuer electronics and radioshack in combo (building the JDM and Flufffy mysef right now) The chip a 12c508 or 12c509 is drit cheap for the "one time programable" OTP ($1.58 on mouser) the JW which is flashable maytimes isn't so cheap. If your interested I can give you plenty of links.

Already ordered a "stealth mod kit" from consolesource.com. I read about doing this though, not something I'd be interested in now since I will spending most efforts on PS2, but just wanted a modde PS1 too.

I am in the same boat....hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread. I only got involved in console modding with the PS2, but a friend has asked me some questions about PSOne modding so I told him I would find out.

He has the older 7-wire stealth chip from modchip.com that he bought about 3 years ago. He is running into trouble with games like Spyro in that it detects the chip and won't run. Is there a newer chip available with updated stealth code? If not, I don't suppose there is any way to turn off the chip to make it undetectable for playing original (not backups) mod protected games. Has anyone installed a switch on any of the old PSOne chips to disable it, like what was done with the Magic chips for the PS2? How 'bout the PS-X-Change disk....any troubles with that and does it work for multi-disk titles.

Thanks for any info you guys can provide.........

That 7-wire chip could be a Multi-mode 2.x or a Multi-mode 3. I'm not sure if the 2.x will work but the 3 will. I sell them and have tested them on both US model PS1's. If it's a 3, you will need to remove 1 wire and use the 6 wire diagram as shown at chipzone.com for it to work in the PS1. That configuration works fine for the anti-mod originals/backups I've tried...Dino Crisis Original & backup and Spyro 3 backup (non-patched).

Also with either the 2.x or 3, you should be able to use the "classic" 4 wire mode on PS1's...but, of course it won't play original or backup anti-mod games.

And the 7-wire mode on the big grey PSX's doesn't seem to do much for anti-mod backups. I installed one on a 7501 and the anti-mod games I listed above did crash. The only thing it seemed good for was disabling the chip to play the original. To change modes you need to hold the power button for 2 secs to change to the next mode. Some models support 4 modes and some only support 3 modes.

What I recommend to my customer's:
    PSX 1001: Multi-Mode 3 (4 wire) no anti-mod support!!
    PSX 5501, 7001, 7501 & 9001: Stealth 4 (8 wire) supports everything
    PS1(all current models): Multi-Mode 3 (6 wire) supports everything

There is also anti mod chip codes, using a cheat utility like the "game shark". But not sure if "all those games" were supported!
