    Hi all,

    I have a question concerning pal/ntsc and the PSone LCD screen.

    Some info;
    - The unit is a psone pal model with additional LCD screen
    - The modchip I used is a new “ONEchip modchip PSone” from Eurasia
    - The diagram I used to mod was 8 wires “onechip_new_scph102.jpg”
    - The colour fix I used is “newps1clrmod.jpg”
    - I am an experienced modder who did hundreds of psx mods in the old days

    Problem;
    - The PSone LCD screen is out of sync during boot sequence
    (just like one of those old TV’s in the 70s/80s that you had to hit for a solid picture)
    - When booting a NTSC game the screen is still out of sync (but it does display in colour)
    - When booting a PAL game, after the incorrect booting sequence, the game works correct!
    - When using both the LCD-Screen attached to the PSX and an external tv, the tv-screen does NOT have any of these issues, whilst the PSone LCD does

    It is starting to eat me up that I can not fix this problem, before I give up and just dedicate this machine to PAL only games on the LCD screen, I thought I’d throw it past you guys in the hope that someone has a clue.

    My guess is that the LCD screen is out of sync due to NTSC somehow other then just the colors (the picture is not in sync, but it is in proper colors and not black/white).

    Can anyone confirm and/or correct me if I made a wrong turn somewhere?

    Thanks!

    if the screen is pal only then the frequencies are different as well as the colour subcarrier . you could try to find out the model of the LCD screen as a lot of them were built to take either NTSC or PAL but there is a dedicated pin on the screen controller board. you may need to add a switch to this pin . in the pinout of a sharp LCD i have yo ground for pal and pullup to 5V for NTSC. may tale a bit of research. try the youtube mod videos to see if someone else has had this problem and fixed it.

    hi Spud,

    ok great, so that confirms i'm not bonkers and actually there's more then just color fixing for the LCD screen.. i'll do some research and think about making a switch.

    thanks for the reply!

    one of the basic differences is that PAL is 50 Hz refresh and NTSC is 60 Hz.
    also the horizontal freq is different i think. been a while since i playd with this stuff. I was using a 4" LCD screen i bought on ebay to make a car MP3 player. this was way back in 1999 pre ipods...... lol

    The Onechip is the reason that the bios screen also rolls. I read somewhere a long time a go that the Onechip changes the BIOS screen to 60hz because of a new protection added to the slim PSOnes that checks if the refresh rate of the game matches the BIOS to stop imports being booted. It also mentioned that by not connecting pins 3 and 4 from the chip the BIOS would not be forced to 60hz but this would also stop any imports from being booted.

    I'm not sure how accurate this information is though as it was just something that I read a long time a go and was meaning to try but never did so try at your own risk but I doubt it could do any harm just disconnecting those two wires.
