I bought a "broken" psone version 102 from ebay.. at a reasonably cheap price. The seller said it was broken as he tried to install a mod chip and something went wrong.

I'm trying to figure out whats wrong... I checked out the mainboard, and there appear to be no shorts (although some points seems like they might have been overheated).

It boots, and shows the Sony Computer Entertainment screen (the white one), then it just stops and stays on that screen. The CD drive doesn't load or focus the laser. I've tried the CD drive in another PSONE and it works more than fine.

I'm thinking it's a point on the way to the CD drive data connector that has a burnt out or just un-stuck module.

    What do you think?

The same thing happened to me, I took it back to the store and got my money back.

If you can't get a refund, you might as well throw it away.

there are a couple of fuses that may be blown. they control different things. one is for video, another for controller/memory card and theres another for cd spinning. it may be blown. check to see if fuses are dead.

grab your multimeter and test each of the numbered fuses. I found some bad 20's on mine. You should get a very low reading, if nothing then you need to replace the fuse. I pulled fuses off a dead PSX-1001 (had the same exact fuses) and got mine to work. Just keep testing different parts of the board (even the 7805 regulator) until you find what is wrong.
