    Hi there !

I know I'm about 15 years late but i'm looking for a playstation 1 (SCPH-5552) mod chip, I'm in the UK and can't seem to find one on-line

I bought a PS1 at a boot fair and want to play some of the classics I used to play as a kid, also some Jap titles that I could never find back then !

Many thanks in advance for any help

    Cheers

    Scott

Have you tried playing games first, a modchip might be previously installed unless the previous owner said it wasn't and you had to install one.

I don't know any retailers sorry but this might help.

It's a swap trick that doesn't require a modchip and still allows you to play backups, but I can imagine it's annoying and probably not worth the fuss but here anyway:

1.) Put some tape on the lid sensor button in the PlayStation so you can load the game with the lid open.

2.) Put in ANY normal black PlayStation disc and then turn your console on.

3.) The game will speed up for a few seconds, then it will slow down, when it slows down switch the burnt disc for the normal disc, you must do this fast and carefully.

4.) The burnt disc will start to speed up for a couple seconds, it will slow down for about a second and speed back up for another couple of seconds, it will slow down for a 2nd time, your now must now swith the burnt disc for the normal one.

5.) The normal disc will start to spin and the screen will go black, when the screen goes black you switch the burnt disk for the original disk for the last last time.

    6.) Enjoy your burnt discs

There are a few ways to play backups..
One is as Dillsta mentioned above..

A few othere are as follows:
    Legit modchip
    Gameshark/Action Replay disk
    Cart (parallel port) ((FATS ONLY))
    Hot swap as mentioned above

The easiest way to play backups would be with a swap with a Gameshark/Action Replay disk or even using a Cart. on a Fat PSX.
However there has been many issues where audio was broken or games just would not boot when using a cart or a GS/AR disk..

The hotswap methed also works pretty well however you have to time things just right and audio can also be broken do to TOC size on the legit PSX boot disk that is used compared to the backup being played..

For full compatibility a mod-chip must be used as all regiens as well as audio will play with out issue..
However finding chips as seen here can be an issue to find now days..
    Happy hunting~
Ya Im Bi-Poler and proud of it
    My list of goodies:
    PS2 Version 1, 3, 9 (Magic V 50K) & 12
    FMCB 1.8b/ESR/OPL/HDL (.8c)
    PSP 2001 (Gen-D3)

Don't mind the smell!.. My brain farts a lot!

The microcontrolers are hard to find but fw for them much harder. ;P As I remember, the best was Mayumi Stealth v4.0 (for SCPH-1xxx to SCPH-7xxx).

If you can't find any modchips online then you could always buy a cheap PIC programmer and some 12C508A PICs from ebay and program your own.

I have the hex files and diagrams if you need them.

EDIT: You could also buy one here if you don't fancy programming your own.
