I have found a local source for a pic programmer DIY kit, but it says it programs 16c**** chips.

Will this work on a 12c**** chip as well?

    Thanks

I had to find one that supported all pics just to be sure. Nice unit, but it is a kit and I must assemble myself.

    Thanks for the info.

it works i bought the kit 96 and use the picall programmer to read
it has a built in voltage regulator to propperly pulse the voltages!!!
you can even go to microchips site and get 5 free sample blank chips!! just watch which form factor you really want

So you were able to sucessfully write to a 12c using your picall programmer?

I bought kit 149b as that was all my local shop had. The software is a little different than the picall.

Is there anything special I must keep in mind while I am writing to the pic? Settings, gotcha's?

    Thanks

Forgive the questions, I am a little new at the programming end.

i guess it depends on how lit you are and how much you trust yourself. the one thing that I thought i did wrong was using the wrong program to try and do something. also i used my laptop-cause i thought it was more secure than my old home sys, but it was the home sys that made everything click.
if you use the pic-all i believe you can test that it is working BEFORE you put any blank in the socket. That would be a good sign of whether or not you will be successful or not. also if you have a chip that is already burnt you can read/verify it to test your kit. did you get 16's or 12's? I just got my samples from microchip- three different form factors of the same chip it is just hella interesting, the newest one is 1/4 the size of the 8-pin 12c508a chip. if you have more q's let me know when you are/ can be online i will try to help. i am on the west coast and am usually on at night, but everyday is different. good luck, take your time, talk to you soon.

Yes, you can use PIC12C508A as well as PIC12C509A.
It should be the A-revision for ONECHIP.
