Hello everyone. I recently purchased a used Japanese PSOne in order to play legitimate copies of Japanese games after realizing that my softmodded PS2 (ver. 3?) was too old to support PSXLauncher. I received the PSOne in the mail today, only to find that the games still bring up this screen upon loading.

I thought that this message meant that the game detected the use of a modchip? These are NOT backups of imports mind you. Can anyone explain why this screen keeps coming up even though both the hardware and software are real?

I believe you when you tell me that. But that just doesn't make any sense. My copies are completely legit.

However, I noticed something which I THINK answers my own question:

The original games boot and then give me this screen, but burned imports (that have the mod-chip detection software patched) boot as normal. Ergo, this PS1 has been modded.

    F**k...

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong with this assumption.

It's a modchip check all right.
That console has a modchip. You need to figure out how to disable the chip, or make it enter it's "Stealth mode".

EDIT: Oops, it looks like you were responding to my deleted post (Deleted when I found that my translation was quite off... my eyes are really bad now since I didn't read some of the words properly ).

Well, considering how I've no idea on how or where to start looking, I figure I'll just send it back and look for a Japanese PS2. It should give me faster loading times, anyway, right? Now...where to find one for cheap is another issue, lol. Thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it.

No, a PS2 won't load Playstation games faster. When A PS2 enters PS1 mode, it really does become a real PS1 (The CD-ROM drive will then only operate at 10x).

what game is that in particular? I had the same issue with an imported copy of Metal gear Solid: Integral in my SCPH-1001 PS1. it has one of the early modchips in it that could be detected by that check, so I had to use some cheats to defeat that protection. once I did that the game worked perfectly.

I'm trying to play any of the Dance Dance Revolution games. I just bought my own arcade machine with memory card slots, and I'm able to upload my edits onto the machine with a PS1 memory card. Although I'm using legit copies with a legit Japanese console, it would appear that the console itself has a modchip installed on its board somewhere. I've been looking for ways to deactivate it, but I don't know where the chip is installed, I don't know what kind of chip has been installed, nor do I even know what it looks like.

My console's model number is SCPH-5000 if that helps narrow the playing field. I really don't know what to do at this point, and I don't really feel like shelling out the money to buy another console. Can anyone help me?

it doesn't matter what region your console is from when it comes to this kind of protection, sicne all that it cares about is the presence of a chip. so the only other way to get around this other than desoldering the chip, installing some kind of switch to disable it or installing a newer "stealth" chip, is to use cheats like I said before.

    ConsoleCopyWorld - PSX Game Codes - D

that's the same site where I got the MGS codes from. you will ned an Action Replay/Gameshark cheat cartridge or disc to use these codes. once you enter the codes (you'll ned the "MOD Check" and "Skip Mod Check" codes), the modchip protection should be disabled, and everything should be fine. personally I just use an Xploder cheat cartridge flashed with Caetla.

so that's going to be the next step for you most likely; track down a disc or cheat cartridge.

hi, i have a japanese ps1 (scph 7000) and till now i just play PAL and NTSC/UC backups using swap methode (my chip just allows NTSC/J) i remember this screen, it's about 9 or 10 years ago on "STRIDER ntsc/j" and "RESIDENT EVIL GUN SURVIVOR ntsc/j" well, to bypass this screen (i don't remember exactly what i did but i'm sure it worked) all you need to do is : just before the PS logo appears hold either cross and square or cross and cercle buttons for a while then tap all buttons randomly (all buttons), and the screen will disappear, i know it sounds weird but try to improvise this way and the game should work !! GOOD LUCK

    @ Hamada:

Unfortunately for me, the method you suggested did not solve my problem no matter which button combination I tried. However...

I opened up my console a second time just to see if there was anything I missed the first time around. As far as I knew, I was supposed to be looking for a set of colored wires soldered to several parts of the PCB joined together by the modchip itself. I found nothing of the sort until flipped the PCB over to examine its underside. Sure enough, there was the chip and its wires as plain as day. All it took was a few cuts from my scissors, and now everything works like a dream.

I just wanted to say "thank you" to everyone who took the time to respond to my questions. Thank you for putting up with me, haha. I didn't know what I was doing at first, but it looks like I found the problem. Thank you all again.
