How exactly does GS / AR Pro work to override the BIOS without a disc? did Sony originally intend to have update paths on the parallel or serial port for future peripherals? or where they just for developers to use a as a way to debug and didn't bother taking them off retail units until later revisions to defeat the cheat carts? the only carts i've ever seen though plug into the parallel port.

I reckon that Sony originally didn't care about taking it away. They probably didn't care that much about GameSharks and Action Replays on their own either. It was in 1999 when hackers found out a way to hack a GameShark, and make the disc swap a lot easier. These "GoldFinger" moduls were originally intended to be an alternative option to a modchip because of the anti-mod protected games, and of course for those who had a classic 4-wire modchip installed to bypass the anti-mod protection as well. Sony were then quite quick about removing the parallel port on the SCPH-900x consoles.
