Video: GeoHot "Jailbreaks" 3.55 Firmware - Runs Homebrew

The news continues to flow in today, this time around coming from GeoHot. He updated his site today with a very innocent looking line, "I made a video". However, what that video contains will change the face of PS3 forever. He demonstrates what many of you have been waiting for, jailbreaking / homebrew on a 3.55 console.

He achieves this by first enabling the Install PKG feature with Lv2diag.self. He then signs his own (NPDRM) SELF file and packaging it into a retail PKG (with no signature). He then patches a file on the flash (NAS Plugin) so that it ignores the PKG's signature. The patch allows the homebrew to install, which then can be run from the XMB. Congratulations GeoHot!

There are no download links yet for these tools, but we hope to see them sometime this week.

Note this still does not allow piracy, but it does allow homebrew on 3.55.

This means homebrew games, no managers or backups. This is because syscalls haven't been enabled.

If you look at what the developers have been saying throughout all of this is that they want to be able to launch hombrew applications. They have achieved their goal! So what happens next? Is someone going to bite the bullet and allow backups to be run? or at least provide us with the tools? Idiot proof tools!

All emulators should work, however, I believe ps3sx uses some things with syscalls, so it would not.

Do not worry, if the big devs don't put it in, someone else will. Similar to the PSgroove thing where at first it had backups disabled.

well i think time will only be able to answer that Doggz, but more or less... im pretty sure some1 will modify this @ some point... i mean this is how it goes... its just the way it is =]

Yeah that's sure, but that's gonna take time. And the thought that all this could already work if they'd allow it drives me crazy.

we need a cfw thats has backup manager(something that can run backup games) homebrew, exactly like psp. i admire dark-alex's work he's a legend of psp and i hope geohot does something like him.

I don't get it. This enables homebrew. Is a backupmanager not a homebrew? Should piracy already able with this?

im not worryed about the "back-up loaders" thay will come in time waninkoko was against piracey as well but that made no sence as thats basicly what his cIOS's enabled or helped coach along

but any how perhaps the rebug project would be a better way for the back-ups as the debug units are inteneded to emulate the BD rom and such

but like i said its only a matter of time untill some one codes a proper back-up launcher that will run back-ups without the use of those pesky syscalls that seem to cause bugs in other games ( that were eventually patched any how) to be brewed up

at the worst we will end up running burned games from a BD-R wich will kind of suck as a BD-R burner is expensive as all hell

yes it´s indeed homebrew and would probably run too. but it wont play backups because of the syscalls

correct me if i´m wrong

nah i guess it has nothing to do with cracking games. i dont really get the magic behind this at all, but i think (as postet so many times before) we need a custom firmware that allows the backupmanager to alter (use, modify? dunno ) the syscalls so backups can be played. Just read trough the other posts and comments, there will be all the info you need. Thats the smartest thing you can do right now, until things are settled and somenone shows up with a good solution. but i will let this done by the pros
