PSX-SCENE Forum Discussion for Sony PlayStation/PsOne/PS2/PS3/PSP/PS VITA
  • unsig - a SIG File Decrypter--- and re-crypter

This first place winner of last month's contest, CrashSerious, is back today with another release for the PS3-Scene. This time, the application he is releasing is called UNSIG, and is used to decrypt and re-crypt Sony's SIG files that are out there floating around the internet. I will let developer CrashSerious explain the rest.

    Good Day everyone,

This time I figured I'd release something I've had a while but didn't think it would be useful to anyone. However, several people I mentioned it to were quite interested in the tool, so I figured I'd bring it out as a release. I'll be honest, I have ulterior motives... We used the last month's winnings to purchase Cobra dongles for the entire team. This month, we're planning on using the donation (should you decide this is worthy to vote for...) to purchase flasher's to protect our PS3's from a Cobra/TB brick.

This release is a tool that will decrypt (and then also re-encrypt) the SIG files that were leaked in the CEX-DEX packages earlier this year and also the files released by an0nymous a month or so ago. The SIG files have not gotten a lot of attention, maybe because no one could read them. However, that's about to change.

Why should you care about this release?

Because the SIG files are a list of instructions for the objective suites application to interface to the lv2diag.self files that were leaked with the previous Objective Suites stuff. Very low level stuff, for the most part, that will actually let you modify settings in the PS3 firmware. With the proper information (the piece that math has kept to himself), CEX to DEX conversions are not only possible-- but are a reality. Things like reading (and writing) the ECID, IDPS, KIBAN_ID, and console serial number... just to name a few. Basically, it's a very low level trusted connection that is made and the PS3 does what you ask it to via Objective Suites.

    How do I use this?

To un-SIG---- In the unsig tab, select "Open SIG File" and the file's encrypted contents will be loaded and displayed in the first text box. Then Select "Decypher" and the Decyphered text will be displayed in the second. It will also create an Microsoft Excel readable (and editable) file in the same folder with ".XLS" added as an extension.

To Re-SIG---- In the resig tab, follow the same exact process as above except select the xls file. The process works the same, except the file saved as a ".SIG" extension on it.

Keep in mind, while this tool will create a valid SIG file that Objective Suites *CAN* use. It should initially be used as a tool to learn more about the SIG file format.

If you find something useful in reversing the SIG files, do me a favor--- put it in the wiki and give back to the scene, would ya? You can start off by looking here -> SIG File Format - PS3 Development Wiki

What we were attempting to convey last month is that, honestly, people need to work together more. No one person is going to break the PS3 wide open. GeoHot, didn't do it by himself. Kakaroto, won't by himself. And neither will math. It's time to work together as a collective group, and not as a bunch of disfunctional individuals. Together we are strong, separately we are just weak.

ONE FINAL NOTE: the last release of Objective Suites that an0nymous leaked had a trojan in it--- BE AWARE and BEWARE!! I know ps3hax released a cleaned one and the first release was virus free. Make sure you get that one if you run the Objective Suites application. HOWEVER, the SIG files in the An0nymous release are new and of value to the scene.

crashserious, if anyone on your team has nor flash and wants a teensy++ i'll send mine to you or anyone you confirm is on your team. For nor duty it still needs the voltage regulatior. its last use was either modchip 3.41 style or downgrade psgrade style so it will need the noralizer flashed on.

      I don't remember there being a modchip for 3.41

"unplug ps3 plug in dongle hit power then eject" that trick is a modchip with a specific method of startup.

any arguing with me saying its not is arguing semantics and a waste of forum space.

EDIT: I know I came off rude I just don't want 50+ people giving thier definition of a modchip or explaining the difference between traditional modchips, dongles, and flashers especially as I consider all 3 modchips of different styles.

Thank you very much for the offer. (Sincerely.) I think all of our NOR consoles are DEX though. Atleast I know my spare CEX's are NAND. Also, taking donations to do something is a slippery slope. We all agree (I think) that we'd stop working on something before we accepted donations upfront to fund something... It's just shaddy. Plus, if you run into a snag or were wrong in your assumptions, people get mad because they expected something out of their donation. And I would say that is rightly so. You should NEVER give someone money for anything before receiving what it is you are hoping to receive.

So, in short, several people have asked for a way to donate. There isn't one and there WON'T be one. I feel a little presumptuous for saying this, but to protect people--- if you see anyone requesting or soliciting donations for me or "us" it is FAKE.

krytonic, the teensy++ is a usb development board (like a dongle) that had an atmel chipset and was one of the first recommended boards to program the reversed psjailbreak code. Basically the first commercial dongle was PSJailbreak for 3.41 then it quickly got reversed and you could buy very cheap programmable boards like the teensy++ to run the code for a fraction of the price of a PSJailbreak.

Crash, what if they wanted to donate based on your previous contributions to the community and not basing the donation on expecting future developments =p

Thank you, but I doubt it and definitely NOT AT THIS TIME. All the devs do this for the knowledge and for the fun... if they aren't they certainly aren't in it for the right reasons.

Case in point, one was literally well over 100 man hours of work not counting the previous work done by those folks that did work on PSL1GHT, PSJAILBREAK, and PL3. If you spread that across the team, we made about $0.50 an hour or less.... that clothing sweatshop for Martha Stuart in china is looking MIGHTY good at that rate.

This utility is just a tool to get people started, I don't have time ATM to dig into it more--- but there are some VERY interesting items in the already released SIG files. If you want thank me, donate, or what ever--- The ultimate thing you could do is SOMEHOW get involved. If you think you can't help, read up enough to be able to start to help or if nothing else... be supportive of the people who do give you stuff. Because realistically, they are giving you their time, and lots of it.

In short, the golden rule... think about it this way, if a homebrew is so terribly horrid that NO ONE likes it--- which says volume more; a thread filled with nothing but hate or a thread with not a single comment?

Isn't that how all online shopping works? As well as all charity? I'm sorry, but i disagree. There is nothing wrong with paying for something before you get it, and there is certainly nothing wrong with donating money/goods in the hopes it will be used for something good, even if nothing good ever comes out of it.

I understand not wanting to accept donations. There are many valid reasons why someone wouldn't want to. However that isn't really one of them.

Trust me. It's way safer to NOT take donations before a release. Having used a DS flash cart and needing info off the forum, people get a sense of entitlement if they pay even a dime out. In some cases the users requests were flat out stupid. Things like "Add savestate. I payed for this piece of crap so I deserve this function that is easy to implement." and a whole lot of other whining. I'd say open donation requests after a major release and don't do them via pay-pal. Snail mail is the safest path.

That is correct. The only VOTES that count are the ones for the articles, not the threads in the Members News Submissions. We get rid of those threads sooner or later, so it would be hard to count something you can not find.

So in closing: IF YOU HAD PREVIOUSLY VOTED FOR THIS ENTRY WHILE IT WAS IN THREAD FORM, PLEASE VOTE AGAIN NOW THAT IT IS IN ARTICLE FORMAT.
