  • Universal Media Server Gets An Update

If you have missed the latest update to the previously released Universal Media Server like I have. Then you will be glad you found your way here. PlayStation 3 developers behind this project have released version 1.5.1 of UMS with additions that include some bug fixes. So if you were looking for an improved UMS experience check out the details below.

    Changelog:
    General:
    • FFmpeg and FFmpeg/AviSynth engines now use the "Video quality settings" from the "Common transcode settings" page
    • Many improvements to the layout of settings
    • Updated FFmpeg to 8bdba0b (20120914)
    • Updated MPlayer and MEncoder for Windows to SB38, which:
      • Enables more CPU optimisations (runs faster)
      • Improves audio sync
      • Tries to fix very occasional freezing issue

    Languages:
    • Updated all languages

    Upgrade Notes:

    For versions prior to 1.5.0:
It is recommended to delete your UMS.conf file prior to installing this version. For Windows users it is in ProgramData/UMS/.

    For all versions:
It is recommended (but usually not necessary) to uninstall the older version before installing the new one.
    Downloads:

What about, Pros/Cons of this vs ps3 media server? Anyone have any, as I of course, like lost must be swayed from Universal Media Server with ps3 media server as I am unsure of why to switch... This is not meant to be rude or discouraging. Just an honest question.

Ps: I currently use ShowTime, Ps3 media server and am very open to trying Universal Media Server. Just looking for more info.

Hi guys, I'm the lead developer for UMS, thanks for the question and thanks Tranced for the article.

UMS is built on top of PMS and we keep updated with their code (though we manually choose it, to avoid the bad stuff), so anything they introduce that is stable is already in UMS. We also have a lot of extra features they don't have. At the moment I think our best feature is that as of 1.5.2 we have a custom version of FFmpeg that should have perfect video/audio sync for every file, whereas the version that PMS uses is buggy.
We also have a Plugin Installer feature, which allows you to download and install plugins within the program automatically. Then there's our True Motion feature which allows people with older TVs to display the smoother framerates that new TVs allow. Then there is the faster version of MEncoder. Plus lots of layout and settings improvements, lower memory use, so I think there is a lot to make UMS a better choice, in my biased opinion

I really do think Serviio Media Server works better than this, tried ps3 media server and UMS along with others. Serviio just offers more online plugins and works much more faster loading onto ps3. The menu system is alot easier too.

lunacryed: It works straight away most times with no configuration

GalaxyS3: I've heard Serviio is great but either doesn't support subtitles or just some types of subtitles. I think Universal Media Server has more features. If you have any suggestions about the UMS menu system please let us know

hey69: Glad to hear it, cheers

      Hi Subjunk!

First of all love your work, been following it ever since you started releasing builds of pms.

Secondly, I have an idea / feature / suggestion

      - Remote Control connectivity directly to UMS (i.e change the media playing currently)

Now you might wonder how this may work as you can't interface to the PS3 controls directly - However I've thought long and hard and I know you've already got a working solution; Placeholders.

A way this could work is by having a 'remote-control' placeholder video file, then then using an external interface to directly to the UMS (e.g a webApp tailored for iPhone). You are now able to communicate directly with the UMS and tell it what video/file to play without communicating via the PS3.

The renderer will then start buffering the selected video and append it to the file currently playing - which in our case is a placeholder.

Well... May not be that easy, it sounded good in my head!

      Anyhow,
      Keep up the good work!

Hi SubJunk and thanks for UMS.

Just a couple of problems I'm having at the moment....

1, PS3 finds Tversity and windows media player almost instantly, yet it usually takes 2-3 minutes for it to find UMS.

2, I am having problems running 1.5.2. After double clicking the .exe it doesn't do anything(i see it flash up in task manager and then close). So I changed to 1.5.1 which runs but won't run as a service (I get an error "error in the installation of the windows service". Previous versions of UMS worked fine.

      Thanks

kaidyn: It would be cool to have an iPhone app for remote control, thanks for the suggestion

gobbledagook: 1) Not sure why that is, it connects instantly for me. Maybe there is a firewall that holds up UMS longer than the others?
      2) Can you try 1.6.0? It's not officially released yet since I'm waiting for the mac version to be built, but the installer is online. I can't post links on this forum but find our Google Code repository and go to the downloads page and you'll see 1.6.0.

Theres a few reasons i find Serviio working better.
      1. It uses less encoders, actually just one, ffmpeg. This makes it less complicated to compile for linux or NAS boxes.
      2. It has a Web UI so i can control and add new content on my iPad and smartphone broswer. Even better for Android, it has its own controller app called ServiiDroid.
      3. The biggest reason it has XBMC style custom plugins for various sites like iPlayer, HULU, YouTube and many more
      4. Its got its new feature that you can watch over 3G and whole different location from your home network
      5. Also read Sony even licenced its software for their devices such as PS3 and Bravia called Homestream so its been approved by SONY themselves

      Thanks for the reply SubJunk.

Yep that cleared up the .exe/running as a service problem (1.6.0 running fine here)

With regards to the PS3 finding UMS slowly I neglected to say it is mainly from within Showtime the problem occurs. Yesterday I waited close to 10 minutes before it found UMS but Tversity etc was found instantly.(When not using Showtime it is found very quickly by the PS3)

      Cheers

GalaxyS3: FFmpeg is great and UMS is always adding features related to it, however it is not capable of some important things (like DVD support, subtitle support, etc.) our users expect.
I contribute to both the FFmpeg and MPlayer projects though so maybe we can continue to bring FFmpeg up to the level of MEncoder WRT those features so that Serviio can implement them too

gobbledagook: Glad the service is working for you now Not sure about within Showtime, I don't use it myself.
