  • TUTORIAL - Shaitan's List: Easily Swap Firmwares Without USB

    PSX-Scene member Shaitan has shared with everyone an easy way to change between CFWs, OFWs, and MFWs on your Jailbroken PS3 consoles; a new way that does not require a USB device in order to install the firmware of your choice. I will let him explain the rest.

    ...

    Hi guys, I'm always looking for ways to make my PS3 experience easier so this was an awesome find. It's nothing special but I'm constantly needing to change firmwares like many of you with otheros++, True Blue and/or Cobra so I thought I'd share it. Please note that this doesn't work on firmwares above 3.55, this is simply a faster and easier way to use update files of the same firmware level.

    Updates take only 3 minutes with this!It's a one click install - period. All the prompts are completely removed, including the license agreement, update details, and confirmation prompt. The PS3 bypasses even the version.txt readout, using only the filename you manually inputted for display.

    To do this you MUST install QA Flag Extra, just using Rebug's debug menu will not work 100% in some cases
    1. Enable QA Flag Extra and go to the debug settings and enable "System Update Debug"
    2. Use Multiman's file manager(or other) and create a folder in /dev_hdd0 called "updater", so it's /dev_hdd0/updater/
    3. Create folders in that directory for the firmwares called 01, 02, 03, ect.(Dont miss a number or it will error).
    4. Copy whichever PS3UPDAT.PUP into one of those folders and........
    5. Rename it to whatever you want, you dont even need the .PUP at the end.
    6. Go to System Update then Update via Hard Disk and it should look something like this:

    Some people with Launch 60gb and 20gb models are reporting that this method gives them a "highest firmware version is already installed" message, if you have one of these models and it does/doesn't work please let us know to help make the tutorial complete.

      QA Toggle turn QA Flag on & off, so is it on for you or off?

      Go to Rebug Selector and change the XMB to Mode:Rebug and XMB:Retail, then there shouldn't be an option under Network Settings until you do the Button Combo(the button combo will give you Debug settings, Edy debug and install packages) if thats what you have then the QA flag worked. I had problems with the Rebug QA toggle so I just went to Rebug OtherOS++ and used "QA Flag extra"

      True but Debug Settings is there whether or not it's QA Flagged, using the button combo while in Rebug/Retail XMB lets you know for sure it's Flagged

      What firmware are you on and what are you using to enable QA flag, I've realized that it must be QA flag extra because it doesn't work 100% if you only use rebug's debug settings(I'll update the tut).

      Now I have cfw355otheros-special++...

      I enable qa flag extra with this CFW... beeps sounds ok!

      Open Debug setting and activate system update debug----> ON

      Go to sSystem update an update hard disk...

      I have installed 4 folder 01(kmeaw) 02(Cobra) 03(TBv2) 04(355otherspecial++)

      When I chose CFW, the ps3 system check file to update and response that I have just installed the last FW possible...

      Try going to debug settings and turn system update debug "off" then use rebug selector to change to MODE:Rebug and XMB:retail, then do the button combo to acces the QA flag debug menu and enable system update debug, then use the rebug selector to change to MODE:Normal and XMB: Debug and hopefully it will work.

      It seems to be a limitation in some Phat models (60G & 20G) from my experience and talking with others, as I've tried every FW (QA flagged or not) this option just won't work for us Launch model owners

      I hope this possibly works for you.
      I had trouble with the updates working after I copied the "updater" folder to my PS3.
      I always got an error UNTIL I used a file manager (Comgenie_File_Manager_V0.6) and noticed that the updates weren't in order on the PS3 top to bottom. On the USB they went 01 02 03 04 top to bottom but when it copied
      to the PS3 it was 01 02 04 03, and it would Error. So i renamed 04 to 03 and 03 to 04 so the
      order on the ps3 top to bottom was 01 02 03 04 and now it works perfectly. NO more error.
      So it looked like this in Comgenie file manager....
      01
      02
      03
      04

      I hope this helps and works for you.
      By the way Thank You for your Support of the PS3 scene, your posts and CFW have been a great help

      Sorry Shaitan but i don't know rebug selector?

      Rebug selector can be found in(when your on rebug firmware) package manager/install package files/PS3 harddisk.
      But like Bitsbubba was saying there is no guarantee this will work on the earlier phat models, there's no harm in trying though and whether it works or not let us know, also if it still doesn't work try all combinations of MENU/XMB in rebug selector

      Thanks BISHOP for your quick reply.
      1. Yesterday I used comgenie file manager and folders on the PS3 was 02 01 03 04 like you.
      2. Now I've deleted updater folder.
      3. With Multiman manager file, I've created all folder manualy.
      4. updater/01-02-03-04. Now I've 01 02 03 04 folder top to bottom
      5. I've Copied into these folders all firmware.

      and:

      QA FLAG---> beeps
      Debug setting
      System debug update--> ON
      Update System--> via Hard Disk

      Same error. System check file to update and response that I have just installed the last FW possible...

      Ok Shaitan, last hope.

      I'm downloading rebug 3.55.2. and Rebug Update Package 0.6 for 3.55.2. I will try update with this firmware...

      I've a question for you:

      What kind of CFW do you have installed when you turn ON your console?

      When you change CFW (for example Rebug--> Kmeaw) and Turn OFF your console and turn ON again... What CFW do you show on your console? Rebug or Kmeaw?¿

      Thanks so much!

      Mmmmm...

      I don't understand!

      1. On 3.55.2 Rebug I can't activate qa flag extra (game quit: no request event).
      2. On system update don't have the options update via hard disk like 3.55otheros++.
      3. I have made change on rebug selector mode/rebug & xmb/retail but i don't need the button combo to acces the QA flag debug menu! It show me debug menu like mode/normal
