PSX-SCENE Forum Discussion for Sony PlayStation/PsOne/PS2/PS3/PSP/PS VITA
  • Sony Soon to Force Gamers into Using HDMI

A recent GameStop memo has been circling the net and has gamers buzzing with frustration. The memo, which recently leaked to Kotaku, reveals that a new "K" model PS3 will be shipping to retailers this week. The new model will force gamers to utilize HDMI to display High Definition movies and games. The new model does away with the option to display High Definition content via component cables. In addition, the memo states that all future PlayStation 3 models will adopt this policy.

Gamers are probably scratching their heads as to why Sony would remove such a widely used feature. Unfortunately, Sony is implementing the change in order to comply with the DRM standards which are known as the AACS Final Adopter Agreement. According to Wikipedia, "the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) is a standard for content distribution and digital rights management, intended to restrict access to and copying of the "next generation" of optical discs and DVDs."

So, what exactly in the AACS Final Adopter Agreement is dictating this hardware change? According to Blu-Ray.com, in 2013 the AACS stipulates that no Blu-Ray player may be manufactured or sold which outputs decrypted AACS content via analog outputs. The component cable featured on the PlayStation 3 is an analog output and the Blu-Ray discs played on the PS3 contain AACS content. It appears that this is the very reason for Sony's removal of the feature. However for the time being, please consider this a rumor until further information develops.

Did you even read the post?
The new K models will still be able to do standard definition through AV cables... The thing they are removing is HD support through component cables...

Any logical response to this has been met with hostility and name calling. So feel free to reply back to this with more name-calling and such. I'm sure it makes you feel superior in every way. I won't deny you that."
A very ironic statement considering your mischaracterization of my posted comments. About my statment concerning the possibility that Sony might remove this feature via firmware upgrade: "it is not in the realm of fantasy."

You quoted my line:"Sony has in the past taken away advertised features from already purchased products." and then twisted that around to make it look like I can't tell the difference between removing it from a product not yet out and one already purchased. Either you did not read the whole post where I speculated (clearly indicating that it was speculation) that Sony might also remove this feature through a firmware update or you intentionally mischaracterized my statements.

Also, you're statements about frothing at the mouth were inaccurate. My tone was completely reasonable. I did notice that in your reply you used all caps in about 13 words (not including capitalized abbreviations like HDMI or AV). That is considered shouting and is closer to frothing at the mouth than my statements wondering about what Sony is planning. You seem to be more agitated by this discussion than the SD people. One wonders why people who have no interest in using a component cable to transmit HDMI to their tv are so upset about people who are concerned that they might not be able to do this with their current equipment. Are they just trolling or are they actually worried that people watching at true HD resolution on non-approved cables are going to bring down the gaming or movie industry or even our capitalism based economy?

These are the companies that are part of AACS that approved no HD over component which future blu-ray players have to folllow (including PS3).

It is developed by AACS Licensing Administrator, LLC (AACS LA), a consortium that includes Disney, Intel, Microsoft, Panasonic, Warner Bros., IBM, Toshiba and Sony.

have fun boycotting those companies really sucks.

@Cole Hey, why you quoting me for stress? I only brought up SD guys because of his inclusion of it in his misrepresentation of my post. Do you want me to be upset at the SD guys who are "agitated" at Sony? I would consider it just as inappropriate for me to be upset at them for perhaps a misunderstanding as you consider it inappropriate for them to be upset at Sony. You already corrected what someone said about sd tv's. Why I gotta jump on them?

It seems my post was misunderstood, I was only trying to point out that this article doesn't affect current owners of SD television sets.
My post wasn't directed at you as it was more of a statement to whoever would be reading your post and subsequently be reading mine. As to why I felt it necessary to point this out, it would seem that there is some misunderstanding on the topic over here. No harm meant.

Did you know one of the main reasons Vista sucked? Do you know why Windows 7 still sucks? But... But almost everyone claims that Windows 7 is "the best windows evah"! Well, guess again... When developing Vista, Microsoft changed its driver model, to include DRM support - exactly like Sony does now with PS3 "K". Did anyone shout back then? Yep... "My old hardware doesn't work!". Does anyone shout now, with Windows 7? Nope. The VERY SAME ****ing hardware STILL doesn't work, but, "hey, it didn't work in Vista as well, and Windows 7 is soooo much better". This very change means that Windows 7 have NO hardware EAX support for any pricey audio card anyone might have bought from Creative (rendering its main feature over its competitors null - and the money people through at it void), and that we have to fight a shitload of DPC errors (that many people face without realizing it - has your PC strangely "stuttered" while playing audio or video files? While printing? Welcome to DPC hell)... But "Windows 7 is the shit". Well, now, PS3 "K" will be "the shit". Let's all bow, close our eyes and wait for another mega-corporation to rape us, 'cause "it has to include DRM support in its products". And then they say that "DRM is protecting customers rights". I'm not saying that it's a huge issue - as was mentioned, "SD guys will probably not be affected that much". But when we go that way, then maybe after 6 months they'll remove a USB port, "and guys with `normal` wireless dualshocks won't be affected that much". And then they'll remove blu-Ray. "And guys that buy digitally through PSN won't be affected that much"... And so on... And so on...

Figures Sony would be on board with the creation of these asinine regulations that will do hardly anything as far as curbing piracy. Analog recording of blurays has to be the smallest niche to ever exist in the warez world, and that is the only thing that this regulation is going to stop.

I'm really hoping that this isn't forced onto "grandfathered" ps3's by firmware. I have an HDPVR that I use for recording/streaming games and that would be rendered useless by this idiocy.

we sure did and it was even worse!!! ahahaha for example you had to buy a separate adapter thing for super nintendo if my memory serves me right!!

Damn Ive been playing video games far too long!! and will probably play even longer

No you wont, you will still be able to record/stream games. This is just to stop the recording of movies.

Sony clarified this earlier on today. This thread needs to be updated really.

I think we should thank sony for incorporating a blu-ray player into the ps3 unlike the 360. Also for those who claim that hdtv televisions dont come with rf ports are talking nonsense because in the uk an rf port is necessary to receive free digital tv such as freeview which is built in to most new hd tv's.

I think Sony dropped the ball here. They should have forced everyone to buy Sony Proprietary cables for 300 bucks a pop under the guise of curbing piracy. Does anyone actually expect to see anything helpful or useful come out of Sony's mouth in a long time? Guess they're hoping to boost their TV sales out of this move... Sony's FAIL continues!

Yes, you are absolutely right. Let's "thank" them for creating a console that sold for almost twice the price of its main competitor, the Xbox 360, due to the inclusion of the BR drive. And for its delayed adoption for this specific reason, and for most of the old games majorly sucking since companies preffered developing their titles for Xbox360 and then porting them to the PS3 (for since it didn't have as large an adoption as Xbox 360, due to its cost, it didn't make financial sense putting priority on it over Xbox 360). Yeah... Thanks a bunch, Sony, for trying (and managing) to "push" your new media format through a GAMES console.

Make no mistake, the BR drive was no gift on their part. We pay for it, and we paid even more dearly in the past.

This must be a ploy to force everyone to upgrade to HD televisions. Even though I already have one, I can see why this would be extremely frustrating for new PS3 customers who still only have an SD television.
Every single game supports lower res televisions on the Xbox and PS3 (and the Wii supports analog 480i as well as progressive 480p, and HD spec 480p (720x480 widescreen). It's the lowest HD spec, but it's still part of the main HDTV specification.

But every single game on the PS3 will play games at the lower resolutions. Including standard RCA (Red/White Audio, Yellow Video) 480i.

At a minimum, every game supports 480i, and on the back of the case it lists what HD resolutions it can handle. You'll notice the back of the case, for instance with GT5, lists "HD Video Output 480p * 720p * 1080i * 1080p". It doesn't say 480i because that only lists what HD resolutions it supports - there's only one SD resolution, and it always supports it (though WHAT analog resolution the game supports is based on the region of the game. PAL/NTSC/NTSC-J)

Sony may do things to force issues, but the fact is this isn't a move on their part. This is them redesigning a model that is going to exist into 2013, and has to comply with those standards.
