  • Sony Soon to Force Gamers into Using HDMI

A recent GameStop memo has been circling the net and has gamers buzzing with frustration. The memo, which recently leaked to Kotaku, reveals that a new "K" model PS3 will be shipping to retailers this week. The new model will force gamers to utilize HDMI to display High Definition movies and games. The new model does away with the option to display High Definition content via component cables. In addition, the memo states that all future PlayStation 3 models will adopt this policy.

Gamers are probably scratching their heads as to why Sony would remove such a widely used feature. Unfortunately, Sony is implementing the change in order to comply with the DRM standards which are known as the AACS Final Adopter Agreement. According to Wikipedia, "the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) is a standard for content distribution and digital rights management, intended to restrict access to and copying of the "next generation" of optical discs and DVDs."

So, what exactly in the AACS Final Adopter Agreement is dictating this hardware change? According to Blu-Ray.com, in 2013 the AACS stipulates that no Blu-Ray player may be manufactured or sold which outputs decrypted AACS content via analog outputs. The component cable featured on the PlayStation 3 is an analog output and the Blu-Ray discs played on the PS3 contain AACS content. It appears that this is the very reason for Sony's removal of the feature. However for the time being, please consider this a rumor until further information develops.

wow sony just wants to fail... so new ps3s: no jailbreak cuz of new hardware No linux cuz of no jailbreak still only 2 usb ports still no ps2 bc no mem card slots still same ugly design NOW ONLY HDMI no more av connection (so you need a hdtv) STILL ONLY WIRELESS G (crap at streaming hd movies) i use a hd pvr to record stuff on ps3/360 its component only so why would i want to buy a new ps3? i know people out there that dont care about hd & still own sdtv's... and tbh most people dont care bout hd the 360 slim has turned into an older ps3 only really cheap its got wireless n, its alot more reliable & alot more usb's... ps3 is probably the first console to actually have downgraded in features over the years. ps3 was a fail from the beginning & will continue to be because sony have lost their mind.

DVI is identical to hdmi, without sound <.<

NOW ONLY HDMI no more av connection (so you need a hdtv)
Might want to reread it. This doesn't affect people using sd tvs with composite cables (or composite cables with hdtvs for that matter). This only affects people using component cables, with an hdtv.

In fact, I see more HDTVs with HDMI and VGA instead of HDMI and DVI.

Lol ! Stop blaming Sony for everything... this one is out of their hands. I wonder how they were able to ship without complying with the AACS terms earlier considering all blu-ray players must. Anyways, all of us here already have one so we needn't worry. Moreover , why would a person buy a PS3 and play the game over component and on an SD TV ? o.O
So you think EVERYBODY with a PS3 has a HDTV? Really. I've had my PS3 connected to an SDTV for a good 3 years before I put it on a HDTV. Almost all of my friends with a PS3 use SDTV instead of HDTV with their PS3. And the PS3 wasn't shipped as a bluray player. It was shipped as a game console. Stop supporting them over these petty acts.

This has nothing to do with SDTVs. If you're not displaying HD this won't affect you. This makes it so that displaying HD video over analog cables, such as component, will no longer be possible. It will deliberately degrade you to SD. The idea is that Hollywood doesn't want HD going over a signal that can't be encrypted, so they force everyone to display HD over encrypted digital cables. This is, of course, stupid, as someone else pointed out that direct Blu-Ray ripping has been possible for a long time. This is yet another way media companies are making the legitimate customers pay the penalty while the pirates won't even notice. And before you say Sony isn't responsible for this, remember that Sony is also Sony Pictures.

You cannot display HD content with Compnent and non-HD content with HDMI anymore - do I get that right? didnt read all the comments

      EDIT:
i guess they just dont want people to record HD movies, games, etc with Component because the Componentcable bypasses HDCP which doesnt let you record stuff with HDMI (fraps + capturecard still works though )

It was shipped as a gaming console and for the past 3-4 years its been sold , it HAS supported analog output. I'm not defending them , hell i'm still on 3.41 as i want to use all sorts of emulators etc on my PS3. But logically speaking , isn't this a progression of technology when at one point you just have to leave behind old tech ? We don't get RF slots on new televisions , i don't see people cribbing about that.

These K models are yet to ship , people getting the PS3 today are more than likely to invest in or already have an HDTV. The early adopters mostly didn't as they were coming over from a PS2 or other console and so the PS3 supported it.

More over , Sony is just one member of the AACS consortium. The decision to enforce AACS over HDMI was because of the pressure by the movie industry. Sony literally has almost no say in this.

Who doesn't get the RF slot on new TVs?Most TVs, including HD TVs i've come across still have RF slots. Just nobody uses them.

Edit : I just realized this will screw people with Hauppauges lol.

Why can't they just make it so you can't use them only while playing movies? Can they not tell the difference between a movie and a game?

i don't see the problem if you have a standard tv use the av, if you have a hd tv use the av or buy yourself a £2 hdmi cable for hd meh!

What's silly is you can get a good cheap hdtv for less than a new PS3. Vizio, Samsung, it won't be a 50 inch but still, a nice hdtv. I don't get sdtv gaming on hd systems anyway.

Previous models will not be updated to require HDMI for high definition viewing.
All new players sold after December 31, 2010 "must limit analog video output of BD content to interlaced standard definition (480i/576i). Then, 2013 is the expiration date for analog video: no player that passes "Decrypted AACS Content" to analog video outputs may be manufactured or sold after December 31, 2013," says Blu-ray.com.
Not sure if that is supposed to be december 31, 2011, but it definitely does not apply to anything bought before january 2011.

But logically speaking , isn't this a progression of technology when at one point you just have to leave behind old tech ? We don't get RF slots on new televisions , i don't see people cribbing about that.
No. Leaving behind useless technologies that are not needed, and would add a cost for a feature no one will use is of course fine, and even welcomed. Spending money to go out of your way to restrict a feature that is built into the system anyway, makes absolutely no sense. They aren't leaving the feature out because it isn't needed. The feature is still there, you just can't use it.

I'd rather a ps3 over an hdtv. In fact, if i didn't have a ps3, i wouldn't have a tv either, because it's the only thing i use it for. Not to mention i already have the ps3.

See, what i don't get is spending money for an hdtv just to play games on. It's the same game no matter what tv you use. There is more to gaming than just the graphics. Some people will refuse to buy games if they aren't pretty enough, some are happy with atari graphics, and others are somewhere in between. Just because you think it is important for a game to be pretty does not mean everyone else does too.

Some people have to take a long time to save up for a PS3 so they can buy one...

Why do so many people fail to understand this?

When someone has so much of something, they tend to take it for granted, and sometimes forget that not everyone else has it too.

people this has nothing to do with SD ,it had to do with analog hd content ,like someone sais the main reason i think is to stop people from recording netflix(these bastards are going up on their fee from 8$ to 16$ starting in sept) in 1080i or 720p ,and yes blu-ray has been cracked but there re different standards so not all blu-ray movies can be copied that way ,they could just come out with a new encryption and then force an update for all players or they wont play the new movies,i think they can anyways, can the players be updated like the ps3,like with on disc updates?they would probably still do it anyways nd then force you to buy a whole new player for newer movies ,hdcp has been cracked already anyways, like a month ago, i hope we see a flood of small cheap chinese made converters/adapters that break the encryption.i realize it would have limited use but some people might want them, besides i think hdmi might be going extinct in the future, there are already better options available ,though not in wide use like diplay port and mini display port ,and thunderbolt, they have much smaller connectors and can do the same thing if not more than hdmi, though they did dumb it down considerably from its inception as light peak which was fiber optic, but all these also use the fail hdcp which is already hacked

Every player is different so how would a disc update work on all of them? That is like saying a 360 update will work on a PS3... Just not going to happen.

I do, I just got a PS3 a month ago by doing just that. I also got the hdtv a year before the same way and it's a tv, pc monitor, and game monitor. The failure would be me getting hd cable/broadband internet and using sdtv and dial up. Why do so many people fail to understand THIS?
