Sony Gearing Up To Issue The Ban Hammer - CFW Users Beware!

The PlayStation 3 scene should have expected this. Various reports suggest that anyone using custom firmware and using PSN/SEN will be banned. Even those using fckPSN or other means of bypassing access to PSN/SEN can be included in the ban wave. I for one have never used online access on my custom firmware PS3, so it would be interesting to see how far the ban hammer reaches. If you are one of the unlucky ones you will be met with a error code 8002A231. Please inform fellow CFW users should you encounter this.

Thank you for your patronage of our PlayStation ® 3 from patronage. Cases of malicious software used on PlayStation ® 3 has occurred recently. Illegal use of the software, in violation of the software license agreement system for PlayStation ® 3, Terms and PlayStation ® Network, the Terms and Conditions Sony Entertainment Network. For the body 3 PlayStation ® violation was observed beyond the scope of the provision of services such as warranty and repair.

Unauthorized software for the PlayStation 3 system was recently released by hackers. Use of such software violates the terms of the "System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System" and the "Terms of Services and User Agreement" for the PlayStation Network/Sony Entertainment Network and its Community Code of Conduct provisions.

Violation of the System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 system invalidates the consumer's right to access that system. Consumers running unauthorized or pirated software may have their access to the PlayStation Network and access to Sony Entertainment Network services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently.

To avoid permanent termination, consumers must immediately cease using and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.

so, is cod or 3.55 the common factor here?

i've signed in and played sonic & all*stars racing transformed and have been fine. i think i've logged like 8 or so hours into it, too. i've also played a few downloadables, etc. I'm on 4.21.1 btw.

It almost seems like a piracy thing when you get in trouble by your ISP. You're getting caught by a company and that company is telling your ISP to warn/ban you and it's not actually your ISP that's doing most of the work searching for pirates. In this case, it almost seems like Activision is doing the checking and then probably letting Sony know.

Idk, i'm pulling most of that outta my butt.

So now we have cheaters and 3.55 black ops 2 users banned. I think it's pretty safe to say if you're on 3.55, stay away from
Black ops 2. I'm assuming 3.55 has vulnerabilities and users running 3.55 may want to think about updating to 4.21-4.30 CFW. If they figured out a way they will most definately reuse this tactic for newer releases.

cheaters should have their actual name banned so anytime they sign up, they are banned and make it for like 5 years.

What is so great about cheating online? Does it make them feel better? Are they under 12 years old?

I can get like single player cheats if you suck at a game and just want stuff unlocked or you just don't have the time to fully experience a game or something, but once you take it online, you should get your ass kicked in real life.

I don't think someone should get their ass kicked and physically hurt in real life over a game but I do think they should be banned from PSN for life.

i can only imagine the people though that cheat and what they're like in real life. they probably talk crap behind people's back and online.

i am more for rehabilitation than punishment, but some people (teenagers) will keep pushing unless they are punished. i pretty much agree with you that it is a bit extreme, but i mean, some people do need a good kick in the pants to get in line. it might not make them realize what they're doing, but hopefully make them stop.

i can almost bet that people get banned for cheating, look for a way to get back online and to continue cheating rather than learn from it.

There is a new breed of cheaters.

Back in the days, they would blatantly cheat for instant fun (speed hack, aimbot, etc...), these days, they make it part of their game.
They pretend to be "good players" with their wallhack and aimbot assisting them, makes them feel "strong".

They will just deny cheating and pretend to be as good as pro gamers.
Not rewarding at all since the cheat does everything for you, you get tired of playing pretty fast, and destroy other players experience.

I used to have teams for various games few years ago, and I had some tricks to weed out the cheaters pretending to be legit.

For example, make a video of a whole match on his side as a demo of his abilities.
Cheaters will automatically refuse that or keep postponing it.

Most of them are probably just kids, or peoples who just don't get the meaning of "having fun online".

But I agree to say that the sentences should be much heavier, to make them think carefully next time before they cheat.

Steam's new system of stamping their profile as "cheater" is a good way and should be adopted on every platform.

I've never tried to go on PSN before this week, but tried BLOPS2 online the other night for 5 minutes and then hopped off. Now it's giving the server unavailable message when connecting. Running Rebug 4.21 spoofed to 4.31, and I can still get on PSN otherwise. So I guess it's flagged for a ban? Figures... I should've come here first lol. Ahh well, if it's banned then so be it. I knew the risks of trying to go online with CFW anyway, so it's my own stupid fault.

They are well within their right to ban for running cfw, as it says so right in the TOA. I agree that they should go after the cheaters only, but any unauthorized software running on your system is a violation of the terms and could result in a ban. It's the risk of running cfw.

I rang Sony yesterday afternoon and asked them for their reasoning behind the ban...they said I had one 'note' on the account, one word which read 'exploitation.'

And they said they would be back in touch.

So today, they rang me back and said that the account and console were permanently banned forever, and said this was due to...

'unauthorised firmware revision and circumvention techniques.'

Goodbye 5 year old account

If what you say is true and you weren't banned for cheating, I guess they haven't banned everyone because they are making an example out of some people to try and get others on OFW or something.

I'm annoyed about both the loss of the console and loss of the account, the fact that it is a first gen 60gb model still running flawlessly...

Well that's why you got banned plain and simple. There is no way around this or a way to justify. People were warned beforehand before the ban wave and nobody listened...

Your console is perma banned now so just cut your losses. You knew what you were doing so I can have no sympathy for you.

You still got a working CFW unit so just enjoy that

This whole thing of "I was banned but didn't do anything wrong - I was only on CFW" is questionable at best. I'm on CFW. I'm online. I played Black Ops II almost 2 weeks before release date. I played Black Ops II online at least a week before release date.

There's more to this than what people are admitting to

Exactly that is my point. It's like you cant really expect people to feel sorry for someone who were playing a pirated game online then getting banned for it. It's like you knew the risks.

It's like a bank robber telling his interrogator why is he in jail he was just robbing a bank he don't see anything wrong with that

I don't think it has anything to do with the pirated version.
I doubt Sony can make the difference between the version floating on the internet and the ones in store (except if the build was different).

Because the one on the internet is most likely a retail version ripped.

Peoples are just caught cheating or using other exploits to give themselves unfair advantages.

This is how I see things.

Even if you did go and buy Black Ops 2 to play it on your CFW, just by ripping it from its BluRay you would make it a pirated version (you are breaking the Bluray protection, therefor you are "pirating").

There is just a small step between legal and illegal my friend.

The way Sony sees it : you HAVE TO be on OFW, and you HAVE TO play your game FROM IT'S BLURAY, then you are legit.

You, using a CFW, even though you bought your game, doesn't make you more "legit" than CFW users using copies.

Because you are basically doing the same.

Ripping the Blu-Ray game to the hard drive is not pirating. As long as you own the original, it is not pirating. Downloading something you didn't pay for, that's pirating.

Also ripping the game does not bypass any copy protection on the disc. In the US you are legally allowed to make backups of the games as long as you own the original. Once you no longer have the original, you must destroy any backups you have.
