  • Sony Gearing Up To Issue The Ban Hammer - CFW Users Beware!

The PlayStation 3 scene should have expected this. Various reports suggest that anyone using custom firmware and using PSN/SEN will be banned. Even those using fckPSN or other means of bypassing access to PSN/SEN can be included in the ban wave. I for one have never used online access on my custom firmware PS3, so it would be interesting to see how far the ban hammer reaches. If you are one of the unlucky ones you will be met with a error code 8002A231. Please inform fellow CFW users should you encounter this.

You are most certainly in the minority then. Sony has every right to block access to PSN from anyone modifying their console for any reason, end of story.

Should be pretty easy for them to detect a modded console; Xbox has the more "stealth" approach. Please remember that Playstation Network is Sony's service, and they have the right to run it how they deem fit. Citizens of [insert country here] are not guaranteed the right to access PSN, and Sony has always reserved the right to revoke/suspend service to anyone.

The beauty of the 360 hack (ODD firmware hack; not jtag/rgh) is that the security chain for executing code remains intact - the console simply believes it's booting the game from factory pressed discs rather than recordable media. Numerous things make PS3 CFWs obvious:
      • Checksum mismatch
      • Hacked Kernel
      • syscalls running that normally don't
      • Homebrew games as 'recently played'
      • Games will have files with different checksum for hacked eboots, etc

I'm sure the list goes on, and I'm also sure there are ways to "hide" most signs of activity (I recall earlier game managers reporting as 'Modern Warfare' for this purpose).

An optical drive hack (not necessarily firmware based) would be the ideal solution, imho, as we could narrow the process down to a matter of burning your backups correctly, and keeping the integrity of code execution security (as cheating via gamehacks is not only obvious, but largely frowned upon by the modding community).

I am very happy that Sony is implementing this if you have CFW then you are meant to play offline. Leave the PSN access for people who legally buy their games.
I have to agree with this.

Not sure if this is related, but i'm banned from BO2 atm. lulz.

I can honestly tell you that this game is worth getting for online. Too bad they're still in a bad need of figuring out the snipers stuff.

I'm pretty sure that Sony will primarily do the bans to make piracy less lucrative and to make sure that cheating is less possible, not to keep people who only use PSN to buy stuff and not play any pirated games online.

There are people who use CFW only for legit things, that is true, and it is a pity for them indeed. But they are most likely a small group of all CFW users. If the majority used CFW only for legit reasons, then there probably wouldnt be much bans i think, so technically one can blame the people who use CFW for piracy and/or cheating for that the bans are being done.

Unfortunately it doesnt seem to be any method for the console companies to seperate a CFW user who use it only for legit reason or not, so everyone with CFW would have to be taken and seen as the same.

I think it is a very little chance if you stay offline. The mail from Sony seems to be ment as a warning. I'm not sure that they will ban people unless they keep using CFW on PSN.

Now that's a good question. I had got an early version of the game and was online when I booted the game. I didn't play any multiplayer, but I looked around in the menus. I'm waiting for the PSN maintenance message to go away and I'll see if booting the game early was enough to ban my account. Like I said it's no loss to me though. I don't play games online
    1. Goku1992's Avatar

I just personally think that all of the bans are because of Black Ops 2. That game is a very popular game so Sony is specifically targeting those users who are playing that specific game. Everyone knows that Black Ops 2 will sell out. Everyone knows the amount of DLC will be bought for that game. Once again it is never wise to use a CFW unit online. Sony keeps track of your system. *Points fingers at users who pirated the game* Black Ops 2 is mainly meant for online anyway so you “have” to buy the game anyway to play it. But like I said I am happy about the bans. It will punish people who pirate the game and expect to get online.
It’s Sony’s rules and their servers if you DON’T agree with the TOS agreement then you DON’T have to use PSN. But going on PSN with a CFW are automatically grounds of instant ban anyway. I strongly urge current CFW users to start investing in another PS3 for online because this will be the end of the line. There is not that many CFW ps3’s In the first place. So why risk your console getting Perma banned for good.

Call Sony crooks or etc..etc.. but you have to abide by their rules. It’s not about me accusing CFW users of pirating games but the vast majority does so. When I had CFW I used to do the same thing. So I know what the hell I am talking about. It’s like collateral you get the game for free but you cant play online. But you cant have both. It’s just the rules just deal with it.

I'm willing to bet if you're smart you can be on psn with cfw and not get banned for it. Stop pirating and using the term backups when using multiman, you have the original disc? Get off your ass and put the damn disc and play.

Secondly history wipe is useless if you keep wiping history with nothing for Sony to look at. Imagine working at an IT field and you come across one of the employees' PC with the history wiped every day. Would you not get suspicious?

The best way to remedy that is after you're done with your homebrew, wipe history and then use it normally, launch the web browser, use the store, play a game, netflix...whatever you do with OFW. The next time you boot up legitimate looking logs are being sent and not an empty list every time with question marks.

Stop playing leaks on multiman and stop cheating.

Sony won't even notice you, unless you make a splash.

      BE SMART.

Yeah that's exactly what the "3k3y" is, which is being released next month. I'm leaving my console on 3.55 and staying off PSN until the optical drive emulator is released by the 3k3y team. At that time I will upgrade to 4.31 OFW and continue running my games from my hard drive. It will be very difficult for $ony to detect that kind of mod to your console.

i could careless about playing games online with PSN. but services like netflix and others are great. Sucks you have to even login for those.

But i really don't see Sony banning consoles who just access those services and others. Its not in their best interest. They use the numbers in negations. when they are getting kickbacks of purchases or access from their systems. That's why Sony provides the services because they can gain some revenue from other sources. They just dont add them things for the users without getting something in retrun. Otherwise it would damage/dismisses purchases from the PS store. So they want those numbers to be large. Since now the Ps3 is open they just want cheaters and people who are obvious pirates (people who log in and play a game that isnt released is one example, and the only ones reported to get a ban so far)

I disagree with people saying CFW and PSN should be separate. I think that only applies if you are disrespectful to the network then yes you should be banned. But when services such as Netflix, Hulu,Amazon ect. Have nothing to do with the network and you must login. I believe we should have a right to the network or those services especially when you are already paying for those services and the network does nothing in return for those services..

When Sony requires you to login to PSN for those services the argument becomes moot "it is their network and you should play by their rules". The ps3 has an internet browser. Just like a PC (though not as good).but I can access netflix through a Browser or hulu on a browser but not the PS3 we are subject to additional rules of the network. When the network is not needed what so ever for those services.

Bottom line people respect the network and it may respect you. I hope every cheater and people who play unreleased games gets banned. They deserve it.

      @STLcardsWS
Well I agree with you stuff like Netflix and etc..etc have nothing to do with PSN so I don’t see why users can’t have access to those things. But for the most part CFW needs to be segregated for the PSN function only. Just like @Spade said if many users played their disc on CFW then the banning wouldn’t be an issue. Sony won’t really ban you for using CFW but Sony will definitely ban you for using a pirated game on their system. That’s my issue I mean that for the most part 95% of users DO pirate off the unit. I personally don’t care if people pirate or not that’s none of my business but I DO care if people want to play it with online. It’s not unfair to gamers who legally purchase their games. (Like me) Then gamers trash talk hackers for cheating and etc..etc.. Because for the little percent that actually do use the PS3 for homebrew there will always be a 95% gap of people who want to go online with the pirated game.

      @Everyone else who have CFW
The scene was started 2 years ago and due that period of time PSN access was limited. People are becoming too comfortable with the temporary PSN access. You ALL knew that PSN would never fully 100% be on the console. So I have no sympathy for users who want PSN knowing the information from 2 years ago. You all knew by then if you really want 100% PSN you would have to buy another console and it DOES NOT TAKE 2 years to obtain $250 to do that. CFW is meant for “backups” and homebrew and OFW is meant for the PSN content along with DLC and etc..etc.. so if you really “buy your games like some say they do” then they can just play it on the other console. Why play a game that you bought on a CFW unit “Knowing” That PSN/DLC content would be limited. I had a dualbooted Ps3 at the time so I had both PSN/CFW abilities and I recommend users if they want both on one console then they have to do that. But as time elapsed I noticed that I was using my OFW part on my ps3 more and I just sold it and bought another PS3. “Best decision I ever made” So when I say that most CFW users pirate video games I know that I am talking about. Very little and very few people buy games for CFW maybe below 5% if it is that high (for those people have my respect) but for the vast majority you are all are just leaches. (Take that as no offense because I leached off the PS2/PS1/PSP /PS3 scene for a VERY LONG TIME) So I know all about piracy. CFW is “MEANT FOR PIRACY” plain and simple not a piece of homebrew will never take away the CFW main functions.

So in the end if you want PSN just buy another console and pay for the game that you want to online. Instead of complaining to Sony for why your console got banned. These are the SAME PEOPLE who NEVER donate to developers/buy games/contribute anything to the scene. You are a leech and have no room to talk. Once again for the people who do buy their games you just gotta buy another game console and not rely on temporary fixes.

this just proves my point, how can i just play with my game discs on cfw if sony your "god" has put higher firmware requirement's on each disc? hmmm, let me play batman arkham city disc on 3.55 and lets see how far that will go. you have to rip the disc to the hard drive first before you can play newer games!
if you have up to date infomation on the scene you should know this info is correct, so saying what you said just shows how ignorant you are and the rest of you are too, you start judging people on your high horse like sony, who do you think you people are? why don't you remove all of your pirated "malware" remove your account from here and go and join a offcial site? you obviously don't belong here if you disagree with what people do with their consoles.
also don't reply to my post i certainly will not be replying back.
