It seems, Sony has finally decided to fight back and its the only way they know how...legally! Today, they have filed lawsuits against George Hotz (geohot) and members of fail0verflow! Geohot has updated his site with several court documents which were issued to him today by Sony's legal goons. He has also removed any and all PS3 hacking tools and keys. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out! Stay tuned for more updates.

Update: This isn't technically a lawsuit against geohot and company. It is actually a legal restraining order. Which, if approved, would force geohot and fail0verflow to hand over their PC's and related equipment, as well as force them to cease distributing tools and keys.

Sony has finally decided to play their poker hand today!

Their MIB (lawyers in black suits) have landed, and the target is of course Mr. George Hotz aka "geohot"!

Recently "Geohot" had published the PS3 'root key' on his website, along with various 'signing tools' and samples of possible ways to install and run 'homebrew'

It seems Sony has decided they have had enough of this, and as of Jan. 11, 2011 have filed a lawsuit against Mr. George Hotz, which will be filed under the court docket of 'C 11-00167 JCS'!

UPDATE: My Wikileaks Fax machine just finished dumping the finished E-filings for today by Sony, with the official Court Stamp and Signings, and included now is what SCEA wants to claim in damages and their reasons, and dates of when the info was released by Team Fail0verflow and Geohot and various other info like sharing of work via twitter, posting youtube videos, etc.

Are you for real? They should be paying him not suing him. This kid is a genius, Sony should recognise him for that and pay him to secure their products. There is seriously not enough respect in the world people like geohot, people are more concerned with stupid shit.

You know this is probably just a scare tactic sony is just attempting to scare people away from using any of this software and more likely devs with making any more tools or opening up any more holes. I doubt it will go much farther than this.

Yeah friggin geohot I got several e-mails from him telling me that if I did not pay him he would hack my PS3 and steal all my megahertz lol.

Just adding a legal perspective here

First there is nothing wrong with using jailbreaking software google apples recent lawsuit to find out more details on the court ruling.

Second they can only sue someone if they infringe on there inteletual property i.e. software and either sell it or distribute it for free. Since this is only jailbreaking software not even a back up manager this doesn't come close.

Third if you do download a game or some software for free somehow you have 7 days before you are in the wrong legally to try it test it out and everything.

Lastly Geohot needs to sue sony for a frivelous lawsuit because they clearly know what he did wasn't illegal this is just a ploy to stop or hinder any homebrew or backup manager progress.

P.S. dont pirate buy it and back it up to be in the right legally.

If you people really hate Sony that much, then why buy a PS3?

Also, since many here are hackers who will illegally download games, you bring ZERO financial benefit to Sony and, as such, your opinion to them is worth sh*t.
