I don't like active shutter 3D TVs. They always give me a headache. Passive 3D TVs for me. Never get headache from those.

Wow this isn't even that hard to make, it's pretty much a regular 3d active TV with a high refresh rate, and it uses the 3d technique to transmit different 2d images to each eye

This article is confusing. Are they saying that 2-player mode for all 3D games is forced into 2D? Or just with the SimulView games? because for $500, they better figure out a way to do 2-player 3D, or I'll pass, and while we're on the subject, SimulView sounds cool on paper, but what it boils down to is unnecessary flair. Probably another one of the PS3's shortcomings cleverly disguised as "new age technology", as you're simply playing a 2D game, but still have to wear the 3D glasses. I smell a flop.

Hmmm. Have to ever used active 3D glasses on a 240hz TV? Assuming that the 3D games will take full advantage of the 240hz refresh rate, the TWO images you'll see on this display will be alternated between your left and right eyes @120hz, which is faster than most regular PC monitors can refresh A SINGLE image. So unless you get a headache every time you use a PC, the shutters may not be the cause.

It is possible that your headaches could actually be caused by a totally different issue. Active 3D glasses are most often heavier in weight than passive, so it could be the weight of the glasses that cause your headaches too.

This is actually pretty cool. I remember reading about this around E3. Much more interesting than that Indonesian pirate dongle everyone seems so enamored with.

Got the exactly same thing on my new Philips 58PFL9956T 58PFL9956T/12 Philips Cinema 21:9 Platinum Series Smart LED TV 58PFL9956T 147 cm (58") Ultra wide Full HD 3D Max with Ambilight Spectra 3 and Multi-view - Philips Support first Glases glases are for Player 1 and second for player 2, got even a button to switch between player 1 and 2 on the glases. They obviuosly stole this from Philips or will pay big money for using it since Philips were first. It's obviously better with a tv that uses this technology because then you can uses it for any console and not just the Playstation...

PS and with the TV one person can play a game and the other watch a movie, you can also play 2 differnet games or watch 2 different movies on the same TV. And the TVs glases are more comfortable, feels more like ordinary glases or sunglases, you can also buy more pairs of glases to the tv and split into 2 groups one group watching a movie and the other group watching another movie, switching group just by pushing a button on the glasses. never again fighting about what to watch...

Just because Philips done it first it doesn't mean they will have to pay them big money. Does Philips pay big money to the person who invented the TV, or the person or invented LCD in to TVs and Philips copied them?

Ever heard of a patent? If not I am not sure where you got your idea of paying them big money from.

Paying big money for using their Patent. I am quite sure Philips patented this even before developing this.

But you could be right, nobody cares about patents anymore so they could just steal ideas and se what happens.

      P.S
I am quite sure Philips had to pay to the person who invented the TV aslong his patent was valid. Only software patents are valid for 60 or so years, patents on ordinary things are valid alot less, not sure how long but less then ten years....

and this days it's cheaper buying judges then patents. Sony got the best judges so they can do what they like....

this is a waste, its to small and lack many features of current actual 3DTV's, anyone with a a passive 3DTV can do this already so save your money and do it yourself its cheaper and a better overall experience than sony's tv at least compared to when i saw it at E3

As said above a patent is only valid for a given period, after that period the idea can be copied. Also if a new idea based on a technology which is still has a patent is deemed to be a significant improvement or it can be argued that there is no other way of doing something then you could use the same/similar technology (take philips 3 headed electric shaver)

Pretty sure any patent would be on the passive/active technology itself. Both already show two different images so trying to obtain and uphold a patent to say no one can make these two images from a completely different source would I think be very difficult as its not a big enough improvement (if any) on the original technology

Also I think the 2d fullscreen multiplayer is a good idea, I'd rather have a full screen than half a 3d one, also having split screen and 3d would be 4 different views being render albeit at a lower res.

I agree that the concept itself is rather easy since the technology already exist. This patent would rather be on how to use the technology. It's like when you use screws and nails you don't patent the screws and nails again, you rather patent how you use them. Everybody could laugh and claim that if they thought about it they could have done it to just like the Columbus egg. Nobody could get it to stand then columbus broke the egg a little just to make it stand and after he done it everybody was wise enough to claim they could have done it to aslong they thought about it.

In this story Philips is Columbus and Sony is just another morron around that table. Only the first person counts, the second is a copy and so on. I myself knew how 3d tech worked and I am not claiming I could have done it. It's rather thinking about it first that makes it great and not thinking about it after you saw it implemented by somebody else. I think Philips would have a case if this goes to court.....

      I have a 2011 model of bravia: 40nx725 led active 3D 240hz...
Sony is using bad panels, clouding and bleeding are awfull in dark scenes.
3D gaming sucks, crosstalk rules no matter how "deep" you set the 3D output(bravia and ps3), even with the best lens model.
If Sony "invented" this new tv set just to selling out all that old panels before offer the best ones...
And 240 Hz is not true, Sony panels refresh rate is ALWAYS 120hz, the only "240" is the leds blinking. No magic here.

2d is a different history, is really good and youll enjoy nice experiences from the x-reallity chip(after days of customization, the stock settings are very bad), i think is the best 2d today.

Sony and others japaneses companies promises a new active lens standard in 2012, im waitting for it...

So... dont believe it until you can see it yourself, no matter the price.
You know what you want, but that is not available yet, lcd/led is not a good technology, is plenty of fails, no matter the company you prefer.
And Sony is the master of the tricking marketing.

Is x-reality chip present in this new model or just the "old" bravia engine???
Is the panel an ips ???
      Is 240hz real ???
Is the lens standard the same(bad) we use today???
Is the 3d emitter diferent and better to the 2011 series???
      Is the panel anti-ambient lights???

      Saludos!!!
