  • RSXGL For PS3 Now Usable

    The rewrite of the Open Graphics Library for the PlayStation 3 has been updated by developers Alex Betts and Kakaroto. I wrote about it a year ago here when I was still just submitting news. Now that the RSXGL is stable this could get homebrew developers interested and release some 3D games for the PS3 scene. We could see some older games ported to the PS3 too.

    Hi everyone!

    When the PS3 homebrew scene started, a lot of people were complaining that it wasn’t possible to write 3D games for the PS3 because of its lack of OpenGL library.
    Almost a year ago, Alex Betts thought he would tackle this problem and he started working on RSXGL… an implementation of the OpenGL 3.1 specification written from scratch targeting the PS3′s RSX.

    For some reason though, no one used it to build their own apps. Maybe the status of the project was scaring them, it was said to be incomplete, there was no GLSL support, etc…

    I am writing today to tell you that RSXGL is perfectly usable! It supports online GLSL compilation, as well as any feature you might want. As proof, I have written a new hardware accelerated engine for the EFL using RSXGL and it worked great! Alex and I spent a lot of time testing and fixing all the issues that were in RSXGL that were made visible by the EFL’s GL engine and I am happy to say that it’s working now. Expedite is able to run most of its tests at 50 to 60 fps on 1080p resolution (instead of the average of 5 to 10 fps it had on 720p before).

      great and thanks, but does OpenGL 3.1 support don't require anything special from hardware side? i mean RSX is similar to GeForce 7800, which according to its specifications is OpenGL 2.0? so, does OpenGL 3.1 support emulated somehow?

      As far as I know, Alex implemented the GL version that the hardware supports, that's why he chose 3.1. From my understanding, the RSX is similar to GeForce 7800 but it has some added extensions.. that might be what GL 3.1 supports...
      I might be wrong though.

      yeah, that 3.1 ver IS interesting as the 7800 was a direct3d 9 card and direct3d9 = opengl 2.x

      i only took a second language in high school because you were almost forced to.

      i'm gonna rely more on my dragon ball search and wish for it. i'm not very self motivated

      man i hope someone else tries to work on porting or making a n64 emulator for the ps3....that'd be awesome.

      I just wondering:
      Can it somehow to be used in Linux for PS3?
      I mean can it make the speed of Linux to be quicker?
      Can it speed up Internet-Browser in Linux? I just know that in Linux for ps3 probably CELLBE is mostly used, so if truly turn on RSX in Linux---things could be improved....
