  • Red Ribbon RC 7 - GNU / Linux for PS3

Developer r04drunner has stopped by the site today to share with all of us the release of Red Ribbon release candidate 7 for PS3. This is an OS you can install on your CFW PS3s via OtherOS support, which will allow you to run the Red Ribbon version of GNU/Liunx from the comfort of your console.

You can either update directly from RC6 (online only), or update manually using the files found below.

    Hi!

Red Ribbon release candidate 7 is now available. It is based on Debian Wheezy and It includes the following changes:

    * Kernel 3.7.1 with the Graf_chokolo's, Marcan's and Gitbrew's patches.
    * New version of the installer with some features added and some bugs fixed.
    * New version of the Red Ribbon theme.
    * Iceweasel (Firefox) updated to the 17 release.
    * Asbestos and OtherOS now will use the same kernel.
    * Kboot now will set the latest kernel as the default boot option.
    * Added a new tool to configure the timeout on Petitboot.
    * Added support for Playstation Eyetoy.
    * Added GUVCview as the tool for capturing video from the webcam.
    * Gnome-Player is now the media player.
    * Added a new tool to configure the PS3's video mode.
    * Added support for NTFS.
    * PulseAudio is now the sound server.
    * Added a new volume control tool.

You can download it from SourceForge.

All the new features are available for the RC6 by installing the latest online update. You need to connect the PS3 to the internet, open a lxterminal and download the file:

    Code:
    wget http://downloads.redribbon.t15.org/online-update-2013-01-10.sh
    Then, you must execute it:

    Code:
    sudo sh online-update-2013-01-10.sh
    And wait until finished.

An installation of the RC5 went trough without problems (although painfully slow despite ssd) and i was able to normally boot the RC5 installation then.
In the next step i tried an installation of RC6 again and it failed at the same point again.
I have solved some bugs of the installer. Please try installing the RC 7 .

I have a spare hdd (320gb) witch i want to use for my ps3.. how big would you make the Linux partition?

    Edit:

Does someone has a link to other++? as gitbrew is offline!
You can use the CFW Rebug 3.55.x to reserve the OtherOS++ space on the HDD.

Unfortunately, the RSX driver is still in development.

    Best regards

Yes I think they use the ps3 for the x-ray or other things because it take less time.. because the ps3 is more powerful than their current machine..

This is all news to me @VSPROD. I would love some more information on this topic if you have any.

Now all we need is a hacker/doctor, and we are good to go Or at least a nurse, right?

Well if true, i seriously doubt it would be anything of use for the scene lol.; They would be official firmware on 3.15 or lower using the official way for linux like we had back in the day. There would be no need for them to update their ps3's firmware. Are they logging on to PSN while giving an X-ray to check out some video. or they playing games that require a new firmware ..

Where is this hospital located at?

Lol! Imagine Sony ban the hospital consoles for using X-Ray processing software while logging on PSN!

But Really I don't think it's practical to use PS3s for such a purpose especially that medical equipment is always on the move (both hardware and software).

I'm really interested to read more about this.

The x-ray stuff is probably this:

PS3 can be used to read x-rays

I dont think it is about any custom or special PS3, probably just a bunch of standard retail PS3s working in a cluster to do heavy calculating. This is all legit, and it would be perfectly fine to log on PSN Of course, there is no need to update the firmware (which they need to do, to be able to log on PSN), and if they do it, they lose OtherOS.

It was not uncommon to PS3 in clusters because it was a cheaper way to get a supercomputer to do heavy calculation. The American Air Force did something similar, they took 1760 PS3 and connected them as a cluster:

US Air Force connects 1,760 PlayStation 3's to build supercomputer

The Condor Cluster project began four years ago, when PlayStation consoles cost about $400 each. At the same time, comparable technology would have cost about $10,000 per unit. Overall, the PS3s for the supercomputer’s core cost about $2 million. According to AFRL Director of High Power Computing Mark Barnell, that cost is about 5-10% of the cost of an equivalent system built with off-the-shelf computer parts.
Someone have speculated in that this is the main reason for the removal of OtherOS, that the PS3 simply made these solutions extremely cheap compared to competing supercomputer hardware. I dont know if that is the case though, since it took about 4 years before it was removed, but who knows, maybe it was one contributed reason for the removal of OtherOS.

      -----------------------

How is Linux running on PS3 now by the way? I never tried it on my 60GB PS3, but i saw videos of Linux running on OtherOS, and it looked really slow. Has this been improved?

OtherOS was removed because of George's work prior to PSJailbreak, they ($0nY) said it was cost of up keep lol

OtherOS was removed because of the military things... buying ps3 was cheaper.. so there was a conflict between IBM and Sony (money!!!)

We don't need a doctor lol!! We need a technician who was working on that. or people who does the installation..

Like yes159 said, there was softwares developped for the hospitals.. I don't remember with who I was chatting on a site, but I will try to find my chat log.. Those rsx driver files was for the PS3 running Linux without xmb!

Did Sony say that when they removed it in firmware update 3.20 as well? I've only heard the cost-money-to-maintain reason regarding that OtherOS wasnt included in the PS Slims. But yeah, i think that the Geohot exploit thing was the main reason why OtherOS was removed in firmware 3.20.

Yeah, i've heard this reason too. I'm not sure if it is confirmed or just speculations, but i guess it could be one of the reasons why OtherOS was removed.
