  • PSN Online Passes Arriving to the PS3 this Fall

When it comes to online gaming, used game enthusiasts are soon going to be out of luck, unless they want to shell out additional cash. Sony has announced that an "Online-Passes" program will be arriving to the PS3 this Fall. The program will be similar to the program which Electronics Arts instituted into Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, FIFA 11, and other titles. With the PSN Pass program, gamers will receive a one time use code, which they will use to activate online play. If you purchase a used game and want to play online, you will be required to purchase an online pass separately. The first game to institute this program will be the highly anticipated Resistance 3, which is shaping up to be one of Sony's premiere titles this upcoming holiday season. Sony has stated that all titles will be adopting this new program.

Not only the new Resistance 3 Game will need a unique (1 code per copy) pass to play online, Sony plans on introducing Online-Passes for every single game! This means; if you buy an used game with an used online-pass-code - you have to buy a new one from Sony!
At the moment, only a few EA Sports' games like Fifa 11 or NFS Hot Pursuit require a pass (1 pass = around 10$).

Seems like the "Playstation" will turn into the "Paystation" and Sony pisses of their customers agai.

Not a smart step in my opinion

Oh come on guys - 2nd hand copies are exactly the same as pirated copies to game developers. They don't make a penny or cent from them. Just like they can't say piracy=theft they also can't ban second hand game sales. But restricting online access to the people who haven't paid them a penny is an obvious way to raise revenue. This isn't some evil scheme. Imagine if you wrote a book - that book sold 1 copy which you got £5 for. Then that copy got resold hundred times for £4. The book would have been sold for £405 and you'd only make £5 even though 101 people had read your book. Now imagine your book had pictures in the middle pages - but you could only view them if you paid the special £2.50. Suddenly you've made £255 instead of 5. It's still not the £400 the guys reselling your book made, but it's a step in the right direction.Ideal world for game publishers right now? Free games for everyone, but you have to pay for the DLC. Most MMOs are going f2p - christ even WoW and EVE have cash items coming in. The smart game developer now would give a base game away free - then sucker people for dlc and expansions. Case in point a game I was kinda interested in came up in the steam sale yesterday - I didn't pay 2.99 for the one game. I paid 5.99 for the 3 of them. This time I'm happy with my purchase, but 9/10 times I'd regret it and the publisher would make more than I initially wanted to pay.

Ownership laws don't really apply the same to entertainment laws. For another instance - say your forefather once paid for a lapdance from a hooker which he greatly enjoyed. Are you saying it's your right to claim a lapdance off her 90 year old arse because he left it too you in his will?

Movie tickets are one-time use, which is why it's considered stealing to see the same movie twice with the same ticket. You didn't own the ticket. You owned the one-time pass.

You could go on amazon and buy it from a seller for waaay less than that. If it comes scratched/broken take it up with amazon and get a refund.

It's called buying games "new", but for me I don't even buy games so I don't even care about this because it doesn't even affect me.
I got a PS3 as soon as I heard I could hack it for free games.

You don't pay $70 if it's new. You pay the extra $10 if it's a used game you're buying.

      Used 54.99+ 10.00 = 64.99 x 1.13 = $73.43 CND = WOW (unless there is no tax on pass ) = $72.13 CND
Do you guys in Canada have anything similar to this site? Glyde: Simply buy and sell your games, DVDs, CDs, and books
If so, it could be a lot cheaper then 54+ used.

Yes we do , we got redflagdeals , Kijiji and many other places. I was just using gamestop/ebgames prices as a example on average how much it would cost for new and used game + pass. Also not everyone buys stuff online sometimes it better to buy it directly face to face without the hassle of waiting for it to come in by mail. Many parents with kids buy at walmart, Ebgames/Gamestop well i don't think they are dumb to buy there, that's their source to buy games without having to order online.

I don't buy from them, I buy from Best Buy, Future Shop, The Source, HMV etc. I only buy used if I absolutely have too

When free choice is taken out of the equation, you are a slave. And that is what this stuff instills into the average consumer - better obey, customer, because you are our slave. If you don't like it - then we have one billion more obedient slaves in China or India who will take up the flak for the west not buying our shit products. Shit, the CEO of Rockstar even said that - 'If we have to pay you guys any better - we might as well outsource all development to India/China'. And guys like you want to support sacks of shit like this? Again - what the hell don't you get about 'arguing for your OWN SELF INTERESTS' rather than some total douchebag CEO whom will never EVEN WANT TO MEET YOU because he thinks it will lower his sense of self-worth? That's how much these guys despise you, just so you know.

It's time you start getting some 'class consciousness' and realizing you're not in the same boat as Mr. Millionaire CEO or his thousands of sweatshop workers at one of Rockstar's HQs - you're an end-user that is being turned even more and more into a pathetic slave.

That is the exact thing that is going on here my friend. My advice to you is to start sounding off like you got a pair while they will STILL ALLOW YOU TO SPEAK - don't give them any fancy ideas on that one now or they'll claim an intellectual copyright patent on that one too.

You're ruining your own future and that of generations to come by supporting YOUR OWN DEMISE. That's all I gotta say on this - better grow a clue fast and soon bubba - because shit is coming to a head - and it isn't just your entertainment they're going after either.
"Class consciousness" - that term is becoming more and more vital by the nanosecond as the companies and the puppets posed as "politicians" continue to "cornhole" the living daylights out of the (ignorant) masses, but unfortunately, it's a shame that the zombies of the 21st Century are more interested in reading absolutely irrelevant bullcrap regarding fake-arsed celebrities like Cheryl Cole on MSN than fighting for their rights and sabotaging the companies that behave like the Zionist terrorists that trample all over the innocent Palestinians.

PS: I gotta admire you for trying to inform everyone regarding the future of life on this world - (no offence, but) perhaps you should start a truth-telling blog or something!

Great so besides paying top dollar for games that end up having no long term value and a story line that sucks arse, when I want to flog them off I'll be getting a whole lot of fuk all for them. Thanks, but no thanks.

greedy blood sucking $ony now is targeting gamers like me who can't afford games at their release date (unless its a very good title) to pay 10$ per game....and their next target is is to make used games completely illegal ...we won't own the games that we bought with our money anymore, we ll only buy a "license" to play the game....i swear once Wii U is out i ll buy every title on it and i ll pirate the shit out of PS3 exclusives.

Some of you seem to be missing the point that if you buy a game NEW, it comes with the online pass. So no, games won't cost $70 now.

Games already cost $70, depending on the game anyway, Black Ops was $69.99 at launch, it's also pathetic the same game for the computer... is $10-$20 cheaper than the console version..

If it wasn't per console they'd be getting backlash left and right, cause if your console dies, or you have to send it in for repair and then send you a new one, they'd be forced to reimburse you the cost of those passes, it would be a per account thing.

Do we all not have job or money here. OMG ten dollar road rage. I thought it was for like a xbl service but its only for used game like the EA games.

Seriously some of you guys are way overreacting. Seriously if you really wanted to play online with that game. You would of bought it new. You buy it used with $10 on top of that you still save money.

      Overreacting? You must be kidding.

Imagine you have 2 kids, and each has their own PSN account. Will you buy 2 Online Passes to allow them to play online?
